I can understand that people feel they need this surgery rather than live... However at that age its a joke... and kinda sick...

At 78 will she/he even be having sex?

Apparently not, as you'd know if you'd actually read the article! ;o)

I don't think that the fact that you think it's 'kinda sick' is a good enough reason not to do it, if it has been judged to be of significant importance for her mental health.

You think someone has a sex change operation to have sex?

I think you need to look into the subject a bit more, or just keep your opinion to yourself.

A transgendered person isn't deemed to be mentally ill, but have a different mental 'state'. That's a very important definition. People who wish to have gender reassignment surgery are, without exception, doing it for themselves. So they can feel 'natural' as a member of the opposite sex. It's not about the physical act and it certainly isn't because they love all the sneers, shit jokes and ill-thought out opinions that are thrown their way. Sad to see most of these things have already been posted in this thread.

I think I,m Long John Silver but the NHS refuse to amputate my right leg and stick a parrot on my shoulder.
It's not fair I say.

Why has it taken 78 years for this person to decide to change sex?

Probably something to do with the waiting list. Finally got to the top.

I just heard an interview with him regarding this procedure on BBC Radio Sussex.

You can tell he hasnt got an advisor because his answers were quite damning and I just cannot see how anymore money should or could be spent on him regarding this.

He categorically said that it is just a lifestyle choice for cosmetic reasons.

I think rightly this is doomed !!

You seem to know a lot about it... trying to say something :)

Look.. i sometimes do not articulate myself properly on here.. I understand that it is a mental issue and can change people’s lives and I’m all for it...

However why the f*** has he decided to do it at 78?

The NHS is under immense financial pressure... Where people with terminal illnesses are being turned down for drugs that could allow them those few more weeks to live... This is not life threatening... This is a superficial procedure to me...

I knew a girl who was suicidal over her chest size. She took an overdose etc... the NHS did not give her the boob job as it was deemed it was just for vanity and yet she was trying to take her life over it... Now anyone who says that all boobs jobs are through vanity is incorrect. I class this op the same on the transgender. However i disagree with the age of the person rather than the op.

Great stuff. Love hearing about this when I've been waiting 2 1/2 years for spinal surgery.

exactly...Notters...

Id hardly prioritise a sex change (as important as you think it is biscuit) above some people that have been waiting months or even years for what i would call a "more important" op.

So what criteria would you use to offer and prioritise NHS treatment (eg age, cost, potential outcome, life expectancy, quality of life ......................etc) and what constitutes a "more important" operation?
Is Notters proposed back operation more important than a fourth abdominal cancer operation for me (cf post#20)? Which condition is life threatening - this seems to be the criterion you've used when assessing the proposed transgender surgery?

I know a lot about it because I worked on 'My Transsexual Summer' for Channel Four. It made me realise how little I knew about the subject, and discussions like this are important I think.

I can see your point about age, but I'm certain this would have gone through a lot of NHS committees before being approved.
