Is there anything in the Argus about the team, the match and the weather in Newcastle?

Think the Albas will be giving the kilts a miss tonight.

A few pints of whisky on the other hand wont go amiss.

From the FA website:

Brighton will be hoping to make Newcastle their third Premiership scalp in this year's FA Youth Cup when they meet them in the quarter finals at St James' Park tonight.

The South Coast club have already eliminated big boys Chelsea and Blackburn in previous rounds and are now looking to take the last available spot in the semi-finals.

They will face Manchester City if they get through, and they have been given the perfect tonic before tonight's game by the news that stars Joe Gatting and Joel Lynch have been released from first-team duties and are available for selection. Gatting and Lynch have both been playing for the Brighton first team recently.

And Gatting was a two-goal hero in the last round for the youth team, scoring the winner in a 3-2 extra-time win at Blackburn.

He said: "We have a good bunch of players here and I think it's the right club for a young player to make it at. If we play to our best then I think we have a chance of winning the competition, we definitely have the ability to play at the top.

"We haven't played our best football yet and we have got past two Premiership teams in Chelsea and Blackburn. Once we start playing well we should have a decent shot at it."

Gatting's father, Steve, was part of the Brighton side which made it to the senior FA Cup final in 1984 but were defeated by Manchester United after a replay. Gatting junior is therefore hoping to go one step further.

Newcastle are not likely to underestimate their opponents, however, having had to overcome lower league opposition in every other round so far. They were close games too, including 2-1 wins away to Sheffield Wednesday and Brentford, and a first tound penalty shoot-out victory over Stoke.

They needed an extra-time winner from Andy Carroll in the last round at Brentford, and Glenn Roeder, then the academy director before taking over as caretaker first team manager, was pleased with the effort on the night.

He said: "I just think it's a fantastic achievement by the boys when you consider the average age of the squad and the fact we have so many schoolboys in the side as well.

"There is no doubt we must be one of the youngest, if not the youngest squad, left in the competition, so to get to the last eight is wonderful."

===

What bugs me about this is that, because their first team is in the Premiership, there is an automatic assumption that the kids coming through the ranks are going to be of the same quality. Which is bollocks.

John Sullivan is the only injury doubt ahead of the game. The big keeper has resumed training after recovering from ankle ligament damage, but tonight's game may come too soon. Richard Martin is therefore expected to be between the sticks.
Schoolboys Zak Beda, Lee Bryant and Kane Louis have also travelled.

Albion squad: Martin (GK), Winterton (GK), Sullivan (GK), T Elphick, Fraser, Chamberlain, Leach, Hinshelwood, Jarvis, Gargan, Skinner, Cobbs, Martin, Fogden, Taylor, Gatting, Lynch. Louis, Beda, Bryant.

Best of luck to the young lads tonight.
Come on Albion.

:ascarf:

Without wishing to tempt fate, Newcastle scraped through the last round, beating Brentford 2-1 AET. Our lad beat them 9-0 in the league a few weeks back.
