As an exile from Brighton/Sussex I have not been exposed to the new wunderbeer - that is until Sunday. The charming men at Ashdown Forest Cricket Club took us to the Coach & Horses (near Wych Cross) - a realy lovely little pub hidden in the valleys of Ashdown Forest.

Dark Star Best was on the hand pump (along with Harveys Best) so I thought I'd give it a go. Three surprises for me - it's only 4%, so a session beer should that be called for; it was much darker than I had expected; it was a far more grown up taste than I had expected. Bitter, caramelly - a bit of the Mild about it. Very enjoyable and wish we could have stayed for a lot more, but was driving. Will be back there this weekend with Mrs TRHK to give it a more thorough road test.

Mods, surely this kind of insulting behaviour constitutes bullying. Perhaps algie should be banned and the thread locked.

That's it, I'm off this site for a while.

IMHO dark star don't do a session beer, they're all too strong flavoured.

Having said that - Stop the presses - I have found a dark star beer that I like the taste of. It's called "over the moon" and tastes a bit like Turkish delight!

I do agree Notters, the Best really packs a flavour punch. Perhaps that could cloy after a few pints. Are the any other pubs in the north east of Sussex that keep a good pint of Dark Star? Maybe I'll try a few of the other styles.

I had a few pints in the Middle House in Mayfield recently - was superb

Wait till you try hophead, it's like drinking a flower meadow.

Dark Star best is my favourite beer of theirs - sadly it'll probably never get the recognition as it directly competes with Harvey's Best (despite tasting nothing like each other).

Not really sure why the Hophead is their most popular beer, when I prefer the likes of Over the Moon, Original, Festival and Espresso. Still, definitely a case of "each to their own".

Festival is quite a nice drop, still some Saison about ( The Hanover, Sunday ) I would try to avoid the India Pale Ale its 6 + % and very potent ! there are so many Dark Star beers there is something for everyone !

I had a drink of it in Shoreham on saturday after the concert and it tasted like warm vinegar and left me with a headache.

Never again
