Question - Why does Tennis need to be played in silence (i.e. the crowd)?

One thing is that they need to be able to hear when the ball is called out, and someone could falsely shout "OUT" or "FAULT" putting them off.

Only just caught up with this thread. I'm English, very happily resident in Scotland for 12 years, and the Scottish/British/English chat from some posters on here is faintly depressing, though no better or worse than some of the stuff being spouted on both sides of the independence debate here.

For my part, I can certainly confirm that Edinburgh was a joyous place to be yesterday, however you might define your nationality. That said, if I was a Scot - even an anti-independence Scot - and had had to put up with near-constant failure in most sports in recent years, I reckon I'd have been claiming that victory for Scotland first and Britain second. As it was, I was just chuffed to bits for the fella.

Thought these two pieces, in different ways, put Murray and the national identity discussion into better perspective. For Mark Steel in the Indy (yes, I know he's Palace), the question of nationality is barely relevant, it's all about the person. Ally Fogg in the Guardian makes the obvious but important point that, in Murray's particular case, local identity will inevitably count for far, far more than Scottishness or Britishness.
