[Music] Most over-rated albums

[Harry Wilson's tackle]

Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits, they peaked with Love Over Gold
Breakfast In America - Supertramp, Crime Of The Century is their masterpiece -
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, I like a lot of Gabriel era Genesis, but never got into this album when released, and despite trying a few more times over the years, just don't enjoy this one.

A couple of years ago I decided to give TLLDOB a second listen.
Wall-to-wall shite, with the occasional glimmer of what sounds like out-takes from previous good albums.
And I am a veteran of the 70p gigs at the Dome; the first 4 studio albums are fabtastic

While I'm at it, may I add Peter 'heart throb' Frampton? Frampton comes alive.
No he f***ing doesn't.

Also, as a massive early U2 fan, Zooropey....dog SHIT! Never listened to anything they made after that.

Out of interest, what jazz do you rate?

Early century New Orleans & Dixieland stuff eg Bix, most wartime swing esp the likes of Benny Goodman, any ill-fated female vocalist who suffered and died too young (your Smiths, Holliday's, Vaughan's etc), the big bands (Ellington, Basie, Peterson), Grapelli & Django gypsy stuff, some of the easy listening great American songbook stuff. Obviously Ella & Louis are timeless and perfect.

I don't love Bebop and can't be doing with basically anything released after Chet Baker Sings.

A bit off topic, but not much jazz discussed on here. Do you reckon Dexter Gordon - One flight up? The opening track “Tanya” is one of my favourite pieces of music.

Although there's some great stuff there, 1959 is when it really takes off for me:

First term at Uni I happened to tune my radio to Radio 3 while eating dinner, and they were playing a bunch of early bebop and talking about Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.

Nipped out the next day and bought a bunch of jazz records (CDs that would each have about 3 albums on them for about £3 or something).

Best random listening choice of my life.

(Armour at the ready) …. I tried, but I just can’t get into Pet Sounds, it just doesn’t do anything for me. I love 60’s music and some Beach Boys singles.

I saw a film called Pet Sounds in Hamburg in the 1980’s. Put me off The Beach Boys for life, and my breakfast for about a month.
