Monty Panesar could be on his way back to Northamptonshire as speculation grows that his days at Sussex are numbered.

Sussex are believed to be ready to offload the England spinner, below, who was fined by police for being drunk and disorderly after a fracas outside a Brighton nightclub last week.

The county are currently investigating the incident, which happened at 4am last Monday, and have refused to comment on rumours they are consulting lawyers with a view to terminating Panesar’s contract, which still has two years to run.

But Northamptonshire chief executive David Smith yesterday hinted the 31-year-old is keen to leave Sussex and return to Northampton, where he spent eight years before moving to Hove in 2010.

Signing Panesar would underline the ambitions of a club which is currently pushing for promotion to division one of the Championship and has qualified for FL t20 finals day but the spinner would still have to take a significant wage cut.

Smith said: “It looks like he will be leaving Sussex and we understand he wants to move back to Luton.

“We will be interested in talking to him if he’s available but he will have to fit into our pay structure. We won't breach it for him.”

..Meanwhile, Sussex won their first game at Hove for more than a year last night as they beat Netherlands by nine wickets in the YB40.
