Someone paid £36.7m for this.....why?

It reminds me of that new sketch show with Harry Enfield in a shop selling complete rubbish to posh rich people with the line "I saw you coming"

i can only guess that somebody bought it for that amount because they think that it will actually be worth more in a few years time. f*** knows why though.

That looks like a Rothko.

So the answer is probably: because they know he's famous and it's worth a bob or two, so they can sell it on in five years for a £10 million profit...

Pretentious bollocks Redders. What is there to "get" exactly? Blocks of colour? Ooooh how talented that man is. Yes, it may look nice to some, but when you get art critics and so called experts that tell you that this painting represents the artists struggle with the demons that are haunting his life and his journey from the depths of bleakness into the light you know they're talking from deep within the depths of their arses.

Any artist who becomes famous could shit in a paper bag and there will be some moron desperate for the status of being a collector that will pay millions for it.

Yeah - but there's always been an element of that in art - a reputation can sell even a substandard work. I'm about to study Rothko as part of my Open University Course - will report back!

Anyone seen the play "Art" by Yasmin Reza?

Totally agree with you. We went to the Tate Modern recently, and I tried, believe me I really tried very hard to "get it", but however hard I tried, two basketballs in a fish tank were just two basketballs in a fish tank. Art ? f*** off!

As for Tracey Emin's unmade bed - anyone with a teenage daughter knows that's not art, just a bloody annoying mess that you can't them to tidy up.

When I went to the Tate Modern the security bloke had a go at me for sitting on an exhibit, I had foolishly assumed that the large block of concrete was a seat.

I actually quite like this painting and it would go quite nicely in the right living room but I wouldn't fork out more than a couple of hundred quid in Athena for it. Does it have some kind of hidden meaning? Maybe it looks better if you put on some of those 3D glasses
