1302 Peter Jones, a friend of Michael Foot's, says he was "passionate" about football and his support for Plymouth Argyle. Mr Foot - who was on Plymouth's board of directors for many years - went to his first football match in 1923. "It was in his bones," Mr Jones tells 5Live.
BBC News - Live reaction: Michael Foot death

And during that time Argyle achieved .....

I believe he was a Plymouth STH. Remembering him brings it home how much "socialism" has changed in this country over a fairly short period. Whatever you think of the politics I consider that he was in it for what he believed rather than for the power and the glory.

well said sir

Very sad news.

A terrible party leader but a brilliant speaker, journalist and polemicist. A great authority on Swift and, almost single-handedly revived Hazlitt's reputation.

Like MoH, I saw him outside Withdean a few years back and he looked very frail then. As Kent said of Lear "The wonder is that he hath endured so long".

Not my politics, but a key figure in British political history. Stuck to his guns and his morals, today's politicians on all sides of the fence could learn a lot from him.

His time as Leader of the Labour Party coincided with the discovery by the gutter press that the way to destroy political reputations was to scoff at the outward trappings - hair, stick and duffle coat, in Michael Foot's case - rather than debate the issues.

We've suffered from this every since.

Much sadder than the right wing press`s attempt to destroy a good and honourable man (thats par for the course) was the publics appetite for reading and absorbing such poor, lazy and downright dishonest journalism.

True. Below is the link to the Labour Party 1983 Manifesto, described at the time by the right wing press as 'the longest suicide note in history'. Read it and make up your own mind as to who have been the real losers.....

http://www.labour-party.org.uk/manifestos/1983/1983-labour-manifesto.shtml

This is in no way an indictment of Foot`s leadership but I can understand to a degree why the British public turned its back on labour at this time but in 92 I was sickened by the way the working classes voted the Torys back in again simply because of that 1 penny in the pound that labour decreed would be necessary to fund better public services etc. It was the day I realised that people are intrinsically selfish and that socialism is always going to come a poor second to peoples greed that can be fed by our modern form of capitalism, more is the pity.

This. Word. Agreed...whatever. When oh when will people get sick of this, as everyone has so clearly become sick of politicians? Will it ever happen?

Just seen a really good tweet. " To all mourning Michael Foot: 'not like today's all surface politicos'. They're like that 'cos you wouldn't vote for him."

Ain't that the truth.

We want smooth-talking, spin-obsessed, snappily-dressed politicians and, guess what, that's what we get.

Or put another way - a scruffy little left-wing wanker.

In all fairness your comment only underlines your age.

Not that politics is my game, but about 15 years ago i had the pleasure of meeting Mr Foot at the showhouse opening of one of my sites in Ebbw Vale, he was the VIP guest.

As i say, I am far from being into politics, but having had the honour of being able to chat to someone like him, it really was an experience, and I for one say RIP.

I do find it sad when people say things like the kid i have quoted above has said, it really is not necessary, but I guess everyone is entitled to there opinion.
