A Muslim colleague's mother died recently.

We all sent him the usual condolence messages, thinking of you at this difficult time, blah, blah, blah.

Then an email from him thanking us for our kindness and support and adding ...
"May Allah forgive her and all of us".

First of all, his poor mother has just died of cancer, hardly her fault, undoubtedly a good Allah-fearing woman, and now he wants Allah to fecking forgive her. Forgive her for what exactly?

And secondly, I don't want or need Allah or any other figment of anyone's imagination to fecking forgive me. How dare he ask his stupid god to forgive me. Don't think he'd like it much if I asked the atheist non-god to forgive him.

Really don't know what makes these poor miguided souls tick.

Whatever point you were trying to make is best kept to your stupid self & not placed on a message board which is supposed to be football related although intelligent subjects are also welcome, this is not a non football but intelligent thread.

Who really cares? I've got some very Christian friends that say they pray for me. I don't believe in God, but I take it as a compliment that they (my friends) are thinking about me and care for me.

I believe one thing, they believe another. No big deal and certainly not worth getting worked up about.

I would presume it is kinda like the last rites, or a final absolution. She tried to live a good life for her god, and may he forgive her for any times she didn't please him. The fact it was "may allah forgive her, and all of us" it seems more of a blessing ("god bless us, every one!").

There are hundreds of millions of Catholics, throughout the world, who pray daily with the words "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death".

As for the Ave Maria ... there is a strong case for arguing that the way this particular prayer developed in popular Catholicism over the centuries owes very little to the priests and much more to the imagination of the people who use it.

But that's far too complicated an argument to spell out in detail on NSC.
