Someone else coming in? Sanchez has proved he’s the current first choice, but if he’s injured or suspended we have Walton or Steele.

Steele doesn’t fill me with confidence & Walton is a bit of mystery as he’s not played Prem football.

You've contradicted your own argument.

Sanchez had no PL experience before he was brought in. Walton, on the other hand, has plenty of first team experience.

Graham Potter said " Brighton and Hove Albion are happy for Maty Ryan to have a stretch at Arsenal FC. When he comes back he might be tall enough to claim a few crosses."

Thanks Maty, hope you play to your fullest potential unless it's against us.

I disagree.

Sanchez looks (very)promising but he's massively inexperienced. A loss of form wouldn't be unusual. That or a red card or injury would see one of the other two playing premier league football. Steele is not a premier league calibre goalkeeper. As for Walton, sadly nothing I've seen or read about him suggests to me that he is a premier league level keeper either.

So what we're left with is a young, inexperienced keeper who looks the part and two keepers who are more experienced but not good enough for premier league level. And, yes, that's my opinion but even if you take the opinion that they could be good enough as far as I'm aware neither of them has played a minute of premier league football.

That to me is a precarious situation for what is one of, if not the, most important positions on the pitch.

Thankfully, Graham Potter and Ben Roberts fundamentally disagree.

Lots of people asking why did we not sell and lots of people concerned that we now have a very inexperienced goalkeeping crew which could be bad news if we get a couple of injuries to Sanchez / Walton / Steele.

I'm sure there is a special clause for keeper loans that allow for immediate recall in special circumstances, e.g. med / long-term injury / illness because the keeper is recognised as a specialist position.
If I'm right, this means it was especially smart of the club to loan him and not sell him.
If, heaven forbid, both Sanchez & Walton broke a leg, I'm sure we can recall Ryan.

Just how viable this is if there is a rift, we could not possibly know.
But I do believe it is a possibility.

Happy to be corrected by anyone who understands the small print of mid-season goalkeeper loans better than I do.

Sanchez looks great but he's very young and inexperienced. If he goes through a rough patch or gets injured I'd be really concerned. We need more senior cover and competiton.

Yes, except WHEN Sanchez has a rough patch or injury. Or red card. They all do, so we can be sure of that. Maybe something's happening to provide stronger cover. Also, I hope that the support on here for Sanchez remains when he has a bad patch.

Good luck Maty.

Loved the passion, all good things come to an end and we are both moving on

Well, yes. Unless there's a way that you know better...?

And why thankfully?

Because (1) those are the goalkeepers we do have, and (2) they work with them every day, and know exactly what their capabilities, their strengths and their weaknesses are.

Put it this way, a rookie goalkeeper was brought in to replace an experienced goalkeeper a few weeks ago. That wouldn't have happened if Ben Roberts hadn't thought Sanchez to be good enough.

Gets a high earner off our wage bill and frees up an overseas space for Caicedo.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was a reason for dropping Ryan in favour of Sanchez who has grasped his chance well.

All part of the club's desire to reduce the age of our first team squad and make more use of our accadamy.

Bit strange how this has all played out. I guess we’ll never know what really happened but you sense that there is a reason rather than a straight forward footballing decision.

No, I don't know better. How could I? And that's the point. you don't know either. The Ryan situation is bizarre. There could very well have been a huge falling out that was in danger of becoming toxic so they thought the best course of action would be to get Ryan out on loan. Even if it weakened our goalkeeping options. It's a plausible scenario so how can you say Potter and Roberts fundamentally don't agree?

I'm not arguing that Sanchez isn't good enough. He looks very capable and did, to me at least, prior to making his premier league debut. It's the other two that concern me if they should, for whatever reason, find their way in to the first team.

How do you know that Potter and Roberts aren't gambling that Sanchez won't get injured? After all, keeper injuries are fairly rare.

Sad to see him go and dismayed at the whole situation. He did well for us, seemed like a top bloke and it’s a pity none of us were able to see him play ‘live’ for us again.

Great move for him.

Now, who are we signing? It’s January 22nd.

Being dropped for Spurs away was clearly a warning to Ryan, obviously it was a warning he didn’t take seriously enough. Whether that was about performance levels, training levels, attitude etc is something we’ll probably never know.

Very good observation actually. I forgot he came back in to the team after that.

our pursuit of martinez in the summer and the injury of Walton in pre-season i think tells us a few things and also disrupted the plan.

Walton was being lined up to be #2 or to competeffor that with Sanchez - no more loans for him.
Button and Steele were being lined up to leave (Button eventually did) if we landed a Ryan replacement. Perhaps they both would have gone if Walton had not been injured.
Thus Potter had concluded - in the summer - that he'd reached the end of the road with Ryan - the club is pretty stats driven and his don't look great.

Sanchez has been a revelation in my view so perhaps the idea we need a big name signing has now receded.
Walton and Steele are solid back ups so i imagine they'll take stock again in the summer.

I’m sure I read a stat recently that claimed Sanchez has already made more saves than Ryan this season? If true it kind of makes it a no brainer for Potter.

he'd clearly fallen out of favour with management - so assume he's been a dick recently. he was a good gk, but not great.

also does this free up a non-UK place in our squad, as we start bringing in new signings?

btw, i'd never want to Steele play in goal again other than pen shootouts, which isn't that useful when you're using up a squad place. total liability as a goalkeeper, rather than shotstopper.

Very poor assumption IMO. He comes across as a great person and consummate pro

I hope this isn't a case for us of "be careful what you wish for".

I get why Sanchez is a better fit for both our style of play and complementing the defenders in front of him.

As with Murray, Stephens, Duffy, Bong, Knockaert, Kayal I haven't got a bad word to say about Mat. I thought he was pretty consistent for his 3 full seasons, he didn't make many bad errors, there were some great goal celebrations and THAT save versus Southampton.

Good luck at Arsenal Mat!
