My thoughts.

Joao Pedro - Within a few weeks he'll be undisputed first choice striker in my view.

Full back - I know RDZ knows more about football and picking teams than me, but i'm baffled that we keep putting central mids there then wondering why we look vulnerable to the ball down the channels. Specialist cover needed

Steven Alzate - I'm bewildered that we're considering doing anything other than playing him

Goals - We're going to see a lot of them next season. For and Against

Van Hecke - Yes, yes just a friendly, but given the lad is trying to stake his claim wither for a place or for a move, that was a dumb sending off

The above all sounds really critical, which I don't mean, as I thought we played really well and obv's we're a very good side. I just think there's a couple of things to iron out, which i'm confident we'll do.

Yep. Agree with this. VH committed a bookable foul in that sequence and the ref played advantage. When play stopped soon after for the Chelsea foul, the ref showed the yellow card. Commentators were puzzled about the Chelsea player he was showing it to. I suspect it was actually aimed at Van Hecke. With that level of confusion, it might explain why JPVH thought he could get away with the lunge that got him sent off. Hard to believe he’d be that brainless if he knew he was already on a booking.

The yellow card caption later is probably a red herring. That’s just the TV company catching up after the 4th official had confirmed it was Van Hecke who was booked.
The Chelsea player clearly DID get booked for his foul. What was missed (even by many in the stadium, like me) was that JPvH was then also shown a yellow (for the rugby tackle seconds before).
The yellow card caption wasn't a red herring - it was simply a little late, probably because it took a minute or two for the people concerned to realise and confirm that two yellows had been shown (it also took a couple of minutes for Hinshelwood's caution to be shown on the caption, and there was no doubt about that one).

So you didn’t see Van Hecke get a yellow, even in the stadium. Surely then it’s possible the card that appeared to be shown to a Chelsea player was actually aimed at him.

I didn't see JPvH get his yellow because I was noting down Nkunku's yellow. Others who were at the game have posted on here that they saw van Hecke being shown his card.

Lots of positives from todays game, even whilst playing with 10 men and showing resilience to claw back 2 goals.

Plenty of youngsters taking their chances...... Hinshelwood played well, especially out of position too. Adingra, Weir and Ayari took their chances as well.

Welbeck looked sharp, no signs of slowing down..

Lallana back, uninjured and coaching whilst playing again.

Dahoud looked like he had been with us for years, pinging balls like KDB. Can't wait to see him doing that week in, week out next season.

Gilmour also dictated the midfield at times too, he seems to carrying on where he left off at the end of last season.

Undav who I've been critical in the past looks full of confidence so hopefully he can keep it going all season.

Joao Pedro looks a really sharp, skilful and exciting player.

Negatives, conceding goals but that's to be expected with the strange full back situation and the mix, match of CBs. The second goal I think had Gross and March in the CB positions!

Mitoma looked to have been worked out and stopped early on. I think he needs to try add something else to his game as at the end of last season and now this preseason it seems teams have found a blueprint to slow him down.

We have become rather predictable playing to Mitoma all the time. We hardly used the right wing.

Dunk, Estupinan, Milner, Lamptey, Buonanotte, Caicedo, Igor, Ferguson didn't feature at all last night. Three or even four or perhaps 5 (if Caicedo doesn't happen and it might) will probably start v Luton. Starting to wonder who is going to be left out of the matchday squads now. Can't fit em all in.

eg:

GK: Steele/Verbruggen
Defenders: Veltman/Lamptey Igor/ Dunk/JPVH/Webster Estupinan
Pivot: Gilmour, Dahoud, (Caicedo), Alzate, Gross, Milner, Ayari
AM: Lallana, Joao Pedro,
Wingers: Adingra, March, Enciso, Mitoma, Buonanotte
Forwards: Undav, Welbeck, Ferguson

* obviously there's a lot of versatility in there so the players will be popping up all over the place. Gross and Milner for example.

that's a squad of 26 already.

+ Palmer ? + Kudus ? + Colwill ?

with no room for any of the other u21s (most of whom will be on loan i imagine)

Matchday squads are always going to be tweaked for opponents, fitness, shape etc and we'll need more rotation as well this year, so I don't see it being a problem. Or at least it will be a good problem.

Naming the squad of 25 once the window SLAMS shut might be harder, but I think we can discount Verbruggen, Ayari, Ferguson, Buonanotte, Enciso... I think Adingra just squeaks it too?

So still room to sign another defender or 2

Maybe I'm football-starved, but I was on the edge of my seat last night* and I can't wait for the season to start. Losing was a minor irritation, but there was so much to be excited about. Bring it on!

Don't think we had the concrete options last season and even terrific players need some rotation.

Pedro, Adingra, and a more experienced Enciso (his performance against Wolves there!) can all play there now.

What a season we could have if even Mitoma is looking over his shoulder. (And not just at the defender falling on his arse)

On last nights evidence definitely think Adingra should make the cut. Something completely different. But considering De Zerbis 'total control' approach, he may have to accept being the 'bit different wildcard' for a season and coming on from the bench.

Seemed to offer many similar traits to Mitoma to me without necessarily having Mitomas exceptional close control and technique.

I noticed what seemed to be a nasty red mark on his lower right leg in the training pictures from the gym in the U.S.
At first i thought maybe it was a shadow or reflection of light but in the outdoor pics where players were wearing short socks i noticed he was wearing some protection which covered his leg up to and over the knee.
Is that what you are referring to ?

He’s posted a picture of it on Instagram , doesn’t look great. Maybe a burn from an artificial pitch ?

Sorry, I meant he just squeaks it as an U21 so doesn't count towards the squad limit of 25.

Cut-off is usually "born on or after 1 Jan" (his birthday!)

But yes I want him playing! Thought he looked good last night and was causing cucurella some problems.

I know a young man from Bettystown that might have something to say about that. A bloke from Manchester too for that matter.

I know what you mean though. João looks incredibly exciting. The "just sign a striker" days are well and truly over.
