He’s a very intriguing prospect. Absolutely no idea where he’ll end up (DM/CM presumably) but wouldn’t be against him coming in next season primarily to cover the wider positions. Definitely one to invest in.

I think we can say now it would be a surprise if Malick wasn't incorporated into the squad next season.

This leaves us with 6, I make it (Yalcouye, Baleba, Hinsh, Ayari, Weiffer, Gomez) fighting for 2 spots. If Milner signs a playing deal, then 7. If you count O'Riley as a CM then 8.

You'd think then something must give. Gomez to be loaned possibly. Of course if the indisputable number 1 out of that selection of very good players, Baleba is sold then the numbers look about right.

Following a season where three of those midfielders have had long-term absences due to injury and three of them have had to play either full-back or centre-back due to injuries and suspensions in defence, then I think that it's no bad thing to be well-stocked in that area, particularly given the versatility of players like Weiffer, Hinsh and Baleba. Don't forget that it's also an AfCoN season coming up, so we'll be missing Baleba, Minteh and potentially Yalcoue himself for a few weeks.

I can’t imagine the club would have signed him if they knew it might be 2+ seasons before he’d be able to get a work permit. My hunch is he’ll be integrated into the first team squad next season with a similar amount of playing time as Baleba was afforded in 23/24.

I honestly don't know how work permits work - I remember we had to loan out Percy Tau because he failed to get a work permit, and he was a full-international.

The work permit rules have changed so not an issue anymore, see below I posted the other day.

Work permit rules have changed.

You now get ESC places in the squad so that you can register players without work permits, I believe we had to do so last season with Baleba as he didn't qualify for a permit.

It's an Elite Significant Contribution player, someone who doesn't qualify for a work permit but will be good enough to play for the team. If they feature enough in enough minutes that season, they can then qualify for a full work permit.

Premier League teams get up to 4 of these to use, Championship 3, and Leagues One and Two get 2 each.
