No! I’m feeling beyond mortified! On the one-hand, Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan was a military devotee who was hell bent on career progression and self-advancement. On the other hand, she was a Humanitarian and above all, a devoted nurse. In all episodes, she was confronted by her sub-conscious and conscious biases, and having recognised these, she reflected and responded to them in a meaningful and positive way. I wonder how many viewers she inspired to pursue a career with the intention of helping others? I reckon it must have been tens of thousands. Wow ... what a legacy … today's 'world statesman', please take note! LS RIP and thank you for the many special moments we spent together. x 😢

I don't remember what night it was shown but the theme tune had the same dread for me as the That's Life and Last of The Summer Wine ones, which meant the weekend was over and school the next day.
RIP Hotlips
I think it was Wednesday night on BBC 2.

 Yes, this reads exactly like a typical first post.

I think it was Wednesday night on BBC 2.
I thought it was on Monday night and Mrs Gwylan thought it was Thursday. You'd think that this would be the sort of thing that the web would be good at finding, but Mr Google only tells us dates of US transmission. Whatever night it was, it was a hell of a show.

When shown in the UK, it didn't have the canned laughter that besmirched the US version - this was against the creators' wishes and, eventually, it was decided that the Brits knew best and it was scrapped in the US too.

Loretta Swit was a big part of the success of the show. RIP Major Hot Lips

The original film was fantastic, and she was a major contributor to it!

zCORRECTION - it wasn’t her in the original film - Sally Kellerman - but she made the role her own….

M*A*S*H is an American war comedy drama television series that aired on CBS
from September 17, 1972, to February 28, 1983.

The most talked about thing at the time was that the Korean conflict only lasted 3 years while MASH* lasted over 10 years.

The Korean War, often referred to as "The Forgotten War," was fought from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953.

The helicopter crash - which [IIRC] wasn’t seen but just reported - involving Colonel Henry Blake was one of the first times I became aware of the emotional impact a TV series could have.

My Dad loved MASH, and as he raised me as a single parent, I got to enjoy it, too. He adored Loretta Swit, and always referred to her Polish roots (Dad arrived here as a refugee in 1948). I don’t often contribute to the RIP threads, but I will make an exception.

RIP Loretta. You will be missed but fondly remembered.
