11 oscars!

Joke.

I fell asleep twice during that pile of doggy do.

What a travesty.

It can only be judged against whats out there, and LOTR is head and shoulders above anything else over the last 12 months (well, 3 years actually).

Each to their own, but I thought it was an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. I can't remember a more spectacular film.

Fellowship was excellent, sets the whole thing off beautifully. Introduces most of the main players, outlines the whole mission, and had a couple of great set pieces.

Two Towers had my chin on the floor with the effects for Gollum. An endlessly fascinating creature to watch - it pushes special effects onto a new level, there's never been such a powerful CGI character. And for a middle film in a trilogy, there's plenty of storyline to get yer teeth into. The best 2nd part since The Empire Strikes Back.

Return of the King was probably the most spectacular film I've ever seen. The battles scenes are really something else, the scale of it is mindblowing, and the whole thing is absolutely gripping. The only criticism I can level at it was the ending went on too long - some artistic licence should have been taken with Tolkiens writing there.

Overall, I'd say this is the best trilogy I've seen since the original Star Wars. Its not just the effects (which are groundbreaking). Its the fact that over 9 hours, you get to know the characters so well that you really find yourself caring about what happens to them - the sign of great writing and great acting performances.
LOTR deserved every Oscar it got.

I agree completely.

That ending went on far too long, I was absolutely desperate for a pee but when I thought it was over, it went on. No way I could pop to the loo!

It was a tad too long IMHO.

I would have thought they could have ended it when the battle had been won and everyone bowed down to the Hobbits.

As it was it then went on and most people in the cinema became agitated.

Next to the wife in teh cinema, this bloke said when Frodo was saying goodby on the boat..."..Oh just f*** off and go will you..."

I think Billy Crystal had it right at the Oscars:

"Lord of the Rings, 11 Oscar nominations - one for each ending"

however it had to stay true to the book (or very close to it) - to have not had the ending it did would have not made it a fair representation of the book.

I too agree that it went on to long for my personal liking - but to dumb it down and cut off the tail (Americanise?) it would have been a travesty.

The Lord of the Rings is WICKED and deserved each and every one of those oscars, especially the 'best lighting in the catering van' oscar.

I'm with sbee on this one. You're either into dungeons and dragons or you're not. I watched the first one and fell asleep. I have no desire to see the other two. I can see it appealing to a 12 year old boy but I'm surprised that so many grown men and women like it. As for 11 oscars, they were all techie ones weren't they, other than best film and best director. Each to their own. I remember being told I should read the book as a kid. I read one page and thought this was complete pants. The film was very true to the book!

I don't see how anyone could dismiss the Two Towers as "a pile of shit" though. Even if you didn't enjoy it, there's surely a level of appreciation for the special effects and acting performances in it.

Police Academy 5 is a pile of shit (as are most of them), but its a bit harsh to put any of the LOTR trilogy in the "shit" bracket I'd have thought.

I'm a grown man (mental age: 12).
I loved the films. Some argued that it was so detailed that it robbed viewers of their need for imagination, but i disagreed (mostly). It's all about Peter Jackson. He has reinvented "event cinema" and next Christmas will be emptier without a further instalment.

Indeed, brilliant film making, i especially enjoy the interaction between the hobbits and the tree geezer.
