I wonder how many people who are deriding addicts and the homeless here would be so blase if it were their kin that fell into such a life. Which is easier than you may think. Your daughter's could become detached, fall in with the wrong people, become addicted, end up prostituting herself for her addiction, living on the street. I'm fairly certain you have no idea how people get into this situation. People on here are first to crash down on paedophiles. Well, a huge proportion of homeless and addicts were victims of sexual abuse in their youth and beyond. But I guess you are too short sighted to see the link. I was homeless for a while and I can tell you, it's not as black and white as you may imagine. It CAN and DOES happen to anyone.

And a disproportianate number of ex armed services personnel are homeless and addicted. they are scum too are they? Why didn't the government offe rthe capable homeless jobs on the Olympics site? Accomodation in return for litter picking, a modest wage and 2 weeks of useful service. Would have been a far better way to handle the situation.

I agree with most of what you say, and would add that my concern is to address the reason WHY people become homeless rather than spending all the money to house and feed them (although we need to do that as well). If we can provide more care for peoples mental wellbeing (and the changing affects of the modern life on mental health) we may find less people have to live on the streets to escape a problem (or percieved problem) at home. Even when problems appear financial it can often be caused by a mental health issue, including depression, anxiety illnesses etc which is causing an inability to work and therefor not to be able to financially support oneself. If we spent more moeny helping our Doctors and even people in the community to spot the signs of this, and not downplay it as stress, and to step in early we may find less people resort to being homeless and then all the ancilary things they may come across when sleeping rough (drugs / alcohol).

I did the read the article, it says nothing about how she's allowed to live in the country or jumping council housing queues.
Personally I wouldn't rush make even more extreme conclusions than a Daily Mail writer
