Yorkie has it absolutely spot on, no one pronounces anything correctly up here! I had to give up getting ob buses as I had the piss taken out of my pronounciations so much. It's getting to the stage now where I can hardly understand my own children. I open the door to their friends & get asked "Is tha Matt laiking t'neet?" Is Matt playing about, apparantly!

Time to come home methinks ;)

Getting the train back from London one day, two northern women were asking when the stop for "Loos" was. Everyone said "I don't know what you're talking about to them".

Then we arrived at Lewes. And they told loudly everyone in the carriage how rude they all were, because no one had told them it was the next stop. And then they stormed out.

I heard Redhill in Surrey referred to on the national weather as Reddle once.

Also how do you pronounce Slaugham, I've heard locals call it Slaffem, sloffham amd sla'om.

The funniest thing though is getting yanks to try pronouncing English placenames.

Tahina Randriamananantoandro plays for a French Div 2 team. We should sign him.

I think he must be from Madagascar - they have the longest surnames. There is a band called Tarika from Madagascar and most of their names are too long to fit on airplane tickets! Andriamalalaharijaona and Rasolaomahatratra for example. Although when you try to pronounce them they are often quite short, but bear no relation to the spelling. The given name Hanitrario is pronounched Ansh.

Samoela Andriamalalaharijaona is the best marovany player I've ever heard - although others might disagree. Maybe we should run an NSC poll on this?

Not bad on the valiha, either. Fanafody - a great album.

:)

This has gone at quite a tangent from the original post! Typical words that aren't used elsewhere... there must be some.

On the place name saga. We have places the opposite way round to yours (i.e. spelt one way, pronounced many ways). We instead have Earley, Erleigh, and Maiden Erlegh, all the same place and all pronounced the same. Just spelt differently.

Strange.

A poll is a good idea, but as the marovany is such an obscure instrument perhaps we should start with the best Ngoni player, or even dumb it down completely and go for the Kora. Toumani Diabate would get my vote on that one... :smokin:
