V.nice beaches in Seaford, reasonably good selection of shops. They are also redeveloping the part of the seafront where the beach huts are to make it more up-market.

A friend moved there from Saltdean and although it is further out, generally he likes it (good schools for the kids etc, near the downs) and he got a lot more for his money in terms of his property.

Go for it if you like the house.

In the shadow of Seaford Head
Warning. I'm 62 so no spring chicken so my views may not suit a younger person..
We moved to Seaford 7 years ago. Could not afford prices in Brighton/Hove/ Eastbourne etc. It's generally a quiet pleasant town but not full of old fogies. We have noticed many families moving in and loads of kids. Reasonable small town shopping, (Big Sainsbury's just outside town on outskirts of Newhaven. Beautiful cliff walks and Friston Forest nearby. Trains every half hour to Brighton/London (change at Lewes for london). Excellent 712 bus sevice to Brighton or Eastbourne, every 15 minutes. A few nice cafes and there are 1 or 2 OK pubs.
If you want the night life go for the Brighton & Hove area but if you want a reasonably priced home by the sea with countryside with average facilties, Seaford is OK.

What exactely do you want to know?

I lived there from 1977 until 2003. I now live in Newhaven, but my Mum, Dad and Sister live in Seaford.

What is it like to live there?

- Well it depends what you're after. It's a quiet place really but the town centre is reasonably lively on the weekends. Shopping is reasonable. You have a Co-op, Safeway and Sainsbury (5 min drive). Eastbourne is only 15mins by car and has free parking on Sundays.

What is it like to eat there?

- There is a new restaurant 'Oliver's' just opened which everyone is raving about. Then of couse a short drive away you have the Hungrey Monk (Banoffee Pie was invented there) in Jevington. There are a few cafes etc. The Tuck Inn is your greasey spoon but doesn't open on a Sunday for some bizarre reason.

What is it like to drink there?

There are quite a few pubs in Seaford. The vast majority of which are a stones throw from each other in the centre of town. A great place for a pub crawl!

They are;

-The Golden Galleon;

This is technically outside Seaford but well worth the short walk/drive/bus. It overlooks the Cuckmere haven and serves excealent food and beer, including Harvey's. They used to brew their own beer there but since it was taken over (by the same people that oen Badgers Watch) they have sold their brewery :(

- The Seven Sisters;

I used to go here a fair bit as they searve 4 pint jugs of beer. The landlord is a bit anal and so I stopped going there. Quite big but could do with a refit now.

- The Hole in The Wall;

This we the pub of choice when I was at school. Used to be heaving every weekend. The Police clamped down on under age drinking and the manager has moved on since. Never been the same. Big pub full of chavs.

- The Shore;

This was always called the Duke in my day and may still be refered to as such. It used to be a complete dive but it has benn totally gutted and refitted. I nice pub if you like drinbking in Ikea. Popular with the youth of today (not the band).

- The Bay;

This pub was constantly opening and shutting. Was called the Admirla for a while. Like the shore it has been refitted but this time by someone with taste.

- The Crown;

Chav city. I've been in there only a handful of times. Usually because I was on a pub crawl and needed to tick it off. One to avoid.

- The Plough;

This is a good pub if there is a few of you all wanting to sit araound the same table and actually hear what other people are saying. Good beer and good food too.

- The Old Boot;

Not so old as it is only a few years old. Quite a popular place that serves good food and beer. I'm not a big fan of the place as it has no atmosphere and a very low ceiling (I'm 6' 5")

- The Cinque Ports;

Used to be my pub of choice for a while but again has seffered a refit. Used to be split in two but has since been knocked through into one pub. I nice pub in the winter I used to think as they had a fire going. Not been in there for ages now.

- The Beachcomber;

Great in the summer as it is right on the beach. Also good if you have kids as there is a huge adventure playground out the back and an arcade inside. I used to love it when my Parents took me there as a kid. Has a resurant for basic food. The pub area is a bit of a dive though. My advice, save it for the summer months when you want to dring outside.

- The White Lion;

Used to be an old mans pub. Again does good food and beer. They used to have a cheese night too! However, to be avoided on a Friday and Saturday night these days as it is now the pub of choice for all the underagers.

- The Office;

Used to be called the flintstones and was supposed to be a wine bar. First place I ever ordered a beer. They served you young in there! Has since become a gay bar but is still wuite nice. Very small though.

What schools have you got there?

Primary;

Cradle Hill - The best as I went there
Seaford Primary
Anacey (sp?) - Roman Catholic school
Chyngton

Secondary;

Seaford Head Community College

Split site Lower school and Upper School. Has a sixth form too.

Private;

Newlands.

I went to Newlands between 1984 and 1987. Didn't do me any good, but I did get buggered a lot.

Doesn't surprise me...

Try Peacehaven instead Gwylan, it's not much better but closer to Brighton and prices pretty much the same.

You're joking aren't you? Peacehaven better than Seaford?

They don't even have a train station? To get anywhere you have to drive through either Brighton or Newhaven.

Peacehaven is basically just a through road to get to Brighton. They used to give away the land for free in competitions! That says it all I think.

If you move to seaford buy a stainless steel car

I bought a scooter from Seaford once, its was so bloody rusty it was unbelievable, you'll get a constant flow of damp salty air and everything corrodes !

You really will go there to die.

And whilst you there house prices will stagnate, whilst the rest of the living world will move on.

Actually its quite a refreshing place for the afternoon. No tourists. Full of rabbits.

LC :rolleyes:

I'd say the main downsides were that it can be a nasty little town on Friday and Saturday nights with the glazier coming over to re-do the bus shelters every other Sunday. Apart from that, it's all good.

I thought you were talking about East Grinstead then. When I was driving, I did the early shift on a Sunday morning, and my only company when I was on my way to the airport or wherever was the glaziers repairing the shop fronts from the night before. As far as Seaford goes, it seems not a bad town. Most of the retirement development seems to be along the seafront. There's a very good fish and chip shop, and the Golden Galleon at Cuckmere/Exceat apparently does good food. If you're into cricket, there's a nice little ground at East Dean. I'd have to agree on the traffic. It can be terrible there, especially when people are heading to Beachy Head on a Saturday or Sunday.

I have come back to Sussex to die. I didn't want to die in Yorkshire.

The house prices on Newhaven & Seaford are rising faster than Brighton at the moment.
My own house has risen £33000 since March 30th when I moved.
The house that is up for sale is nrxt door but one to me & identical.
Two weeks ago another house nearby sold for £2K less so that is a rate og £1000 a week.

It sounds morbid but I had exactly the same thought. I hope I have 40+ years left, but I didn't want to grow old in London.

Thanks for all your comments: I have a really positive view of Seaford now.
