Living in Seaford

As I've mentioned before, Mrs Gwylan and I are house-hunting in the Brighton area and hope to find somewhere shortly.

We've got details of a cracking property in Seaford which is just what we're looking for but I don't know much about what Seaford is like to live in. Anyone from around there?

What goes on in Seaford? Does it have a cinema? Are there gangs of chavs wandering the streets? Is everyone over 80? Are there any new developments planned over the next few years?

Any information gratefully received.

Its a ghost town,no one has lived in Seaford since it was abandoned by the civilised world in 1898!
Does this help?

:lolol:

Cool that means I can just go down there and move into one of the abandoned houses down there, and pay no rent or tax, or for the purchase of the house.:lolol:

(Strike heads off to Seaford by train)

Not a lot. The town centre caters for all day-to-day needs (there's a Safeway), but most people head across the Downs to Eastbourne if they want anything more.

No, the nearest is in Eastbourne.

No more than anywhere else in the town centre.

It does seem like it at times.

Nothing major as far as I know. To the east is Cuckmere and the land between Seaford and Newhaven is all marsh. There is a new block going up in the town centre and the old holiday chalets near at Bishopstone are being turned into houses but apart from that there's nowhere really to develop.

Aesthetically, Seaford is really nice. Far nicer than Newhaven or Peacehaven where chavs are aplenty. It's clean, laid-back and quiet. Very quiet. To be honest it's more of a retirement town where people let their days drift slowly by than somewhere you might want to start a family. There's very little in the way of work or things to do, but then Eastbourne is only a fifteen minute drive to the east, and Brighton is half hour the other way, so if you've got a car then it probably won't be a problem.

House prices won't be as high as Eastbourne or Brighton either.

The football team used to be managed by an ex Albion goalkeeper Brian Powney niot much use in house buying I know but a bit of useless info.

The same Brian Powney who shacked up with an ex-classmate (male) of mine from Seaford Head School.

Having not lived there for a good few years, but a regular visitor due to family, I'd say the main downsides were that it can be a nasty little town on Friday and Saturday nights with the glazier coming over to re-do the bus shelters every other Sunday. On Sundays, apart from the extortionate Safeway, Seaford closes for business. If you're working in Brighton and are looking at driving then you're stuck with the hellish A259 which grinds to a halt at Peacehaven, or trying to get onto the A27, the tailback of which starts at the Beddingham landfill site, plus the money you saved on your Brighton mortgage will be eaten up by your monthly petrol/train commuting bills so you may as well opt for Brighton in the first place. Apart from that, it's all good.

i lived there from approx 1972 until 1993 - i have to say it is great...it may not have the buzz of brighton or even eastbourne but it has loads of pubs, and a very laid back feel to it. live in chailey these days and still miss the sea!

For a cinema you can also go to the UCG at Brighton Marina which would only take you 25 minutes along the coast road.
