My Dad's generation were miners, steel, transport workers etc. They tended to be left wing (socialist) - but they never asked nor sought
anything on a plate nor whinged or moaned.

I would suggest your fathers generation was left wing authoritarian, the lefties that many people describe on here are more libertarian in their views, my late uncle and red Baron no less at the Post Office Union hated immigrants, homosexuals and dogs!

The OP has reminded me of one quote from my many years of NSC that stuck with me, something along the lines of :

The world isn't one big happy family, and I wouldn't want it to be either.

I am all for tougher sentencing if I thought it would work and not be unfair on the poorer in society. For instance your point on making £1000 fine for those texting whilst driving. That would work for sure. The rich would possibly pay the fine and never do it again. The poor couldn't afford the fine and would then be jailed for not paying the fine and you would have kids whos mothers and fathers end up in jail because they were poor. Those children then have periods in their lives with no mother or father to keep them on the straight and narrow, possibly then resulting in them following into other crimes.

I don't have a solution. If we did then we could solve all these issues but they are very difficult to solve. So I wouldn't class you as right wing for having that view. Its a good view to have but the practicalities are not so straight forward.

You cannot cater for the percentage that will always commit crime no matter what,be it the poor or the rich, however i believe what purpose it serves is to reduce the overall numbers that take a chance to get away with it and thus we have more of a deterrent and hopefully a better society as a result.

can poor afford to run cars and mobiles.....it's always baffled me a bit that one.

I utterly reject the ludicrous assumption that those of us on the left are over educated and elitist ivory tower dwellers whose first inclination upon contact with members of the plebiscite is to judge, correct and patronise.

Also, you weren't to know, what with your confessed inability to pay attention at school, but you cannot divulge into something. It is grammatically incorrect. This is only a small point, but worth considering, as your misuse of language prompted me to dismiss everything you had to say before I read it.

The referendum campaign has muddied the water somewhat with some dyed in the wool socialists siding with rampant free market capitalists and of course some 'progressive' liberal types who claim to support/speak up for the poorer, disenfranchised members of society heaping patronising abuse on the poorer, disenfranchised members of society when they vote for the wrong side.

Interesting times.

"Intellectuals are naturally attracted by the idea of a planned society, in the belief that they will be in charge of it".

They probably voted Labour at a guess, out of tradition rather than conviction in most cases, but if you fired a few probing questions at the average coal or steel worker, they wouldn't be too far off Winston Churchill in their position in the political spectrum....

I remember my grandad (a bricklayer by trade) explaining why he was a socialist and why his political hero was Ernest Bevin, not Winston Churchill. Socialism was about opening access to the great institutions of the state to working class people like Bevin.

Ok I concede on that point....father in law is disabled ....so I perhaps overlooked that, but genuine poor really could not afford it in my opinion.

If they can afford to do the crime they should be able to afford the time?

Socialist writings can give encourage the middle class left's unfortunate tendency to idealise the working classes. This can lead to disappointment when they turn out to be just as brutal and venal as all the other classes. Those of us who grew up working class are under less illusion. Jarvis Cocker for instance:

"Like a dog lying in the corner,
They will bite you and never warn you.
Look Out.
They'll tear your insides out."

The old school theory is the uneducated are "RIGHT" and the "LEFT" are the more educated ???
What makes you right or left as this country like many has huge divides!!

Personally I'm a right wing man who had a poor education(tough upbringing)although unlike many lefties I have common sense and knowledge.I would like my country to keep its identity and do not want us to ever lose our independence and sovereignty.I don't want 100's of thousands of migrants coming here every year although I don't have a problem with immigration and I'm certainly not racist as we righters get called regularly:glare:

I find the lefties really annoying and really weak and unpatriotic....I see them as socialist plonkers who do nothing but read about our history and persecute us for being brutal at times in our history.I see these people as not being proud to be British and if anything are anti British and obsessed with culture and human rights and so on.
It's as if they're some kind of GOD that can't be wrong!!
How can a leftie ever be wrong when humanity is being discussed ?
Is it because it's the easy option to be left as you can never be wrong?

Who's to say the world has to be one big happy family?
Who's to say that humans should not kill each other?
The world a has become to close and countries, cultures, religions were separate for a reason...If there was a god he put all these in place on planet earth for a reason and the biggest mistake in my option is for the world to integrate as it's becoming. For thousands of years humans have killed eachother for many reasons all over the world and that will never change. The animal kingdom is no different as many can never ever live together without killing eachother...that's a different analogy.

You will never get world peace FACT...due to cultures and religious divides...Many do successfully integrate and actually live together, but most are born here and that's all they know.

The gulf between left and right is amazing and it's fascinating to see the paths that lead to your way of thinking wether it's good or bad.

Sadly you uphold your original point in the first line. To some anyway, as I don't believe it's always true.

'I find the lefties really annoying and really weak and unpatriotic....I see them as socialist plonkers who do nothing but read about our history and persecute us for being brutal at times in our history.I see these people as not being proud to be British and if anything are anti British and obsessed with culture and human rights and so on'

I could write an essay on this, in fact I did once but don't have it on file at present. So here's my thought through question:

1. How are you being persecuted for the brutal past of some of this nations rulers ?

2. How is someone who questions brutal practises and believes in human rights anti-British ? Are such practises and a distaste for values in humanity 'un-British'.

3. How are 'lefties' wrong to be obsessed with culture when many speak of Britain's loss of cultural identity ?

Now, supposing there was no such thing as a left or right delineation.

4) What constitutes being patriotic ?

Surrey people are lovely.

They would of course sell their own grandmothers if they thought it would pay for another skiing holiday and ram you off the road with their over-sized 4x4s, but apart from that they are a smashing people.

That's just brought back horrid memories of walking to work through the Reigate school run traffic, or "death by Posh Doris" as it's known.

The old school theory is the uneducated are "RIGHT" and the "LEFT" are the more educated ???

what old school theory is this? this is a daft position to start from, as if there have been no right wing thinkers or historians, and the left are automatically educated.

I think the political elite are quite happy for us to split and argue along the lines of left and right.
[...]Left V Right just polarises everyone and gives you the instability currently enjoyed after the Brexit vote that had a more polarised electorate than ever seen before

and this is just so much conspiracy theory. left and right is just a way of compartmentalising some concepts to begin discussion, make some assumptions on broad views. the result of Brexit has cut through left/right faultlines. the polarisation is more due to the individualism and people sense of entitlement, with snowflakes that think the world should agree with them.

so all told by the start of page two, this discussion is off to a flyer... :lolol:
