"*Update* Sky footage just shown appears to have the Spanish police throwing James Scowcroft, Frank Sinclair and Matt Elliott into the back of a police van?
Shocked Leicester fans are not only incredulous about the incident, but even more surprised when the names that are doing the rounds as involved are (alledgedly!) the following: Elliott, Freund, Scowcroft, Gillespie, Dickov, Coyne, Nalis and Sinclair. Looking at the tv pictures it would appear three of these are indeed correct. We've yet to see who the other bunch are and what really happened."
Radio says that in Spanish law, when you are arrested the case quickly goes before a judge who decides whether there is enough evidence to press charges.
"Spanish authorities said four players were charged with sexual assault, while four more were charged with trespassing and not reporting the incident to the police. "
So basically they went to have a look at what was going on?
Three Leicester players have been freed following police investigations into an incident during the club's Spanish training camp.
Steffen Freund, Nikos Dabizas and Danny Coyne were all released by a Spanish judge in Cartagena after the court heard evidence from the players and three female complainants.
Freund has been released without charge, while Dabizas and Coyne have been 'provisionally freed' which means none of them will be facing the original charges made against them.
A further six City players - Paul Dickov, Lilian Nilis, Matt Elliott, Keith Gillespie, Frank Sinclair and James Scowcroft - will be detained overnight while the judge considers whether there is any further case to answer.
It is anticipated that a decision will be announced by the judge on Friday morning.
Leicester chief executive said: "We are pleased that three of our players have been cleared of improper conduct. They are now free to leave Spain and will be returning to England as soon as is possible."
The club have also released a further statement about the situation which reads: "Due to the ongoing investigations of the Spanish authorities, the club is not in a position to comment in detail on the specific charges and allegations which have been made.
"However, the club is treating this situation with the utmost seriousness and will be launching its own full and thorough internal investigation.
"We have spoken with our players and they wish to make it clear that they will vigorously contest all charges and allegations made against them.
"Our immediate next step is to bring home all our players as soon as is practically possible and get everyone back on the training ground ahead of our Premiership trip to Birmingham in nine day's time."
The Leicester Players Held after Sex Assault Allegations
By Vik Iyer, PA News
Here are a series of profiles on the Leicester City players alleged to have been involved in an incident at the Spanish resort of La Manga.
Frank Sinclair
Sinclair, 32, is a Jamaican international who began his career with Premiership giants Chelsea. But the Lambeth-born star, who has an FA Cup winners medal, made headlines when he was one of four footballers to upset American hotel guests grieving over the September 11 attacks in 2001. The group were allegedly stripping, swearing and vomiting while horrified Americans, stranded due to flight cancellation caused by the atrocity, looked on. In January, 2000, a man lunged at Sinclair while the star was partying in a central London nightclub. Sinclair suffered minor injuries.
Keith Gillespie
Dubbed the new George Best for his pace and skill as a Manchester United youngster, Gillespie, 29, soon proved the comparison true in other more ignominious ways. He developed a gambling problem and, in March, 1998, ended up in hospital after a night out in the Irish capital, Dublin. Gillespie is a Northern Ireland international and left his previous club, Blackburn Rovers, after falling out with manager Graeme Souness.
Steffen Freund
The 34-year old German international has only recently joined the club. He is a tough tackling midfielder who formerly played at Premiership rivals Tottenham Hotspur. His professionalism is widely admired in the game. In connection with the incident in La Manga, Freund was released without charge.
Paul Dickov
Dickov, a married 31-year old Scotland international, began his career at Arsenal, the current Premiership leaders. He is known as a tenacious player, with nicknames such as “the wasp” and “the pest” summing up his determined on-field personality.
Matt Elliott
The 35-year old Scottish international has enjoyed a rags to riches career, battling his way from lower league teams to become an established Premiership star. In March, 2000, his son, Alfie, who was then only three weeks old, was diagnosed with lung condition bronchiolitis. He has since recovered.
Danny Coyne
The little-known Welsh international joined as understudy to Leicester City’s first choice goalkeeper, Ian Walker. The 30-year old began his career at Tranmere Rovers and played for Wales against Switzerland in 1996.
James Scowcroft
Scowcroft, 28, has played at England U-21 level and previously played at Ipswich. He once suffered a career-threatening injury which left him temporarily, partially paralysed. A previous manager hailed him as an “intelligent” footballer.
Nikos Dabizas
Greek international who joined Leicester City in January after five years with Newcastle United. The 30-year old has won the Greek championship. Dabizas is married with a three-year old son with his wife Sophia due to give birth again in May. He recently told the Leicester City official website: “I need my family with me. It makes me feel more comfortable to have them with me and I don’t want to stay in a hotel and be away from them for too long.”
Lilian Nalis
The 32-year old Frenchman scored wonder goal early in the season against Leeds United. The midfielder has played for top clubs across Europe including Auxerre.
