It seems all the incompetant refs just move on to manning VAR. Given how many blatant errors he made in his career, it wasn't exactly a surprise he would get it wrong.

Agree. If the referee is letting the play go on because of giving advantage to the side that was offended then the VAR should be able to give a penalty back if he feels the advantage was not to be given.

100% a penalty. One look was enough. It was an obvious on field penalty and an even more obvious VAR penalty referral. It is sometimes unbelievable how wrong they can get it.

It certainly looked like a penalty, I think it probably was. However I saw the replay many times and couldn't conclusively see the defenders foot catch Welbeck. Perhaps hard to overturn on that basis. Most blame here lies with the on pitch ref not giving it I reckon
