LCD TV advice needed

Ok.

So I get home from work tonight for the wife to inform me the old tv's picture has gone green....and sure enough after much fiddling with Cables and Menu's on the remote the only conclusion is the Tube or something has gone and a new one is required. YAY ive been waiting for far too long to get rid of thing its like a dinosaur sitting in the corner of the room.

I know we have had threads before on this but with the ever changing price and spec of tvs a few months is a lifetime in this field.

So NSC advice please a 37" lcd is required, 100hz i pressume is minimum these days with the ability to plug my laptop in and play films perhaps.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Lets say £500 i think its do able ?

buy online, you can save over £100 over shops like currys and comet etc.

I bought this TV for my mother last month and the service was excellent,

I have used the shop twice now and never had a problem.

The only thing to be wary of is when looking in Currys or Comet etc is the picture has been set up to look good in a retail site (dynamic mode) which is going to be completely garish and bright in your home , so try and play with the remote to select various settings.

I used to think that, but I've had mine less than 4 years and it has now developed a blue stripe of stuck pixels down the middle. I'm not buying Sony again.

Alternatively do your research online and then go buy from Richersounds, if you are confident you can work things out for yourself or a good independent like Hills in Portslade if you need more hand holding

If you can stretch to £599, you can get an LG 50inch 1080p Plasma with 600hz scanning, had mine about 3 months & it is stunning

I would strongly suggest that when buying n ew TV of any type that you take out an extended warranty. Following my brief but unpleasant stint as a 'Tech Guy' with Currys last year I found out that unlike PCs you quite often cannot get replacement parts for a TV and in fact if it goes wrong it's dead. The extended warranty means that if they cannot repair the set they have to replace it. You need to be wary of 'Manager's Speacials' as they are end of production models and the ones that there quite often not replacement parts for. TVs are actually not at all reliable which rather surprised me as well. I might add that Currys has abysmal support and I would never buy anything from them.

Sounds great but 37" really is as big as my lounge will handle.
And also not sure on Plasma over LCD

I have a sony bravia and a samsung, and despite being older the samsung is much better.

As for makes, I had a 32" Panasonic Viera while I thought was pretty good - although it did pack up recently after 5 years. Have upgraded to a 40" Samsung, and I like it alot.

If you can strect your budget to 580 you can get the Panasonic TXL37G20. It is a freesat HD TV and has wireless networking to give you access to the internet or files on your pc ie music photos videos etc.

If not, I have always had Samsung tv's and had no bother what so ever with them (and they are always slightly cheaper than other brands. I have a three year old 37" and have had no problems with it

Deffo stick with LCD.
Unlike a plasmas screen, with LCD you get zero reflections on the screen, theres no static (so it doesn't attract dust), it doesn't weigh half a tonne, and it uses less energy.

M&S sometimes have good deals on TVs and John Lewis are offering a free 5 year guarantee on all TVs at the moment (plus free delivery). Whether either have what you want or at the right price is a different matter!!
