Because all the hand wringing, moral outrage, and frothing mouth rabid commentary.
Bearing in mind the global news response to Suarez biting a bloke, this would actually be a proper news story, it would be a total meltdown.
The press would have a field day, we'd be outraged, but we'd be glad people were being caught and punished, and we'd still go and watch.
Plus the football would be sh*te, like it was back in the day.

Excuse the google translation:-

Doping, WADA director throws suspicion on football: "Compromise with Fuentes"

Has long been talk of suspected doping in football and in particular on some Spanish clubs but so far had only been whispered in a low voice and without evidence. To try to pierce the wall of silence we thought Howman the Director General of WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, which in an interview during the congress of FIFA, threw the stone in the pond:'' No sport and 'free by doping. I think football was one of the sports compromises with Fuente. I'd live in a dream if I thought that there are people ready to look for shortcuts in every discipline and in every country,'' says the executive agency dpa. Our thoughts go in particular all'Operacion Puerto, an investigation that has turned the spotlight on an international network of doping linked to Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes. To the doctor, and that 'was convicted in the first trial held in Madrid, were juxtaposed especially cyclists. In reality ', it seems that among the clients of Fuentes there were also athletes from other disciplines. '' In fact, we received information that cycling was not only involved in the activities' of Fuentes,'' said Howman. The doctor offered its services to football? '' I suspect that it did, I think that football was one of the sports compromises'', adds the director of Wada. To make things clear, we should analyze the blood contained in the more than 200 blood bags seized in Fuentes. The court of Madrid has rejected the demands, including that of Wada, proceed to the examination of samples to be destroyed at the end of the proceedings. '' We are fighting this battle and we will not surrender. We have participated in the process' cause in our goals was also the identification of persons to which the blood. We have not reached the finish line and we have filed an appeal,'' he says. '' I think adds, that the whole world wants to know. And I believe that every athlete, even in Spain, wants to know.'' Waiting for any news' from the courtroom, the World Anti-Doping Agency has addressed the Fifa towards the adoption of a biological passport for athletes. The document, already 'been present for years in cycling, would offer the blood profile of the players and allow you to check more' easily possible anomalies in the controls. '' I will introduce this year and will implement it in the next. It 's something that we expect from most sports,'' said Howman hoping for an overall growth.

But at the end of the 2010, the ITF reduced its penalty to just seven months of time prohibited from playing (time served) for "substantial assistance provided by Mr. Odesnik in relation to the enforcement of professional rules of conduct."

The details of that "assistance" were never made public by the ITF. Kurier, an Austrian newspaper, reported that Odesnik's suspension was halved because of reports he made against Austrian Daniel "Crazy Dani" Koellerer. In May of 2011, Koellerer was slapped with a lifetime ban from tennis.

So you grass up 1 nobody, and get over a year off your sentence.

On the surface... Thick as shite... Clearly...

Lots more to be revealed regarding this incident to come though...

"I don't have a sabotage story... I basically put my trust in someone and was let down," said Gay, 30.

"I made a mistake. I am pulling out of Monaco (this week's Diamond League meeting) and the World Championships."

Yeah he just took the wrong supplement:-

SI has learned that Gay has been treated by Atlanta chiropractor and anti-aging specialist Clayton Gibson. In the sports world, the term "anti-aging" has often come to signify therapy that uses hormones -- usually testosterone and HGH -- and testosterone precursors, like DHEA. DHEA can be obtained over the counter and is permitted in certain sports, including baseball, but not those contested in the Olympics.

ALWAYS read the label... And if you're an international athlete ALWAYS send a sample to a different lab to be tested before you take something.

Why, as an Olympic athlete, would you go to an anti-aging specialist?

Quack clinics are a speciality in the US.
A bogus weight lose clinic is about to bring down the next generation of Baseball.

But the US still hasn't reached a low enough point to do anything about it.
I'm sure they will eventually sanction PED sport.

Because they'll supply you with testosterone and HGH, but you can say it's their fault and you trusted someone and they let you down, rather than saying it's a fair cop - this stuff helps me run faster.

That shows how pointless urine testing has become.

Just Team Sky alone were tested over 70 times at Le Tour.
I'm curious as to how many tests were carried out at Wimbledon, alas that info still seems to be on a need to know basis.

Sport is becoming a joke. What can we do to raise the issue of drugs as an important one?
