When I was just a little boy, I asked my mother what should I be, Should I be Brighton, Should I be Palace, Here's what she said to me; Wash yer mouth out son, And go and get your fathers gun, And shoot the Palace scum, Shoot the Palace scum.

If you've ever sung that ....
I haven't ever, because it's a dickhead song, for dickheads.

And that bloke who shot the sheriff. Although in fairness he didn't shoot the deputy. And it was more of a musical confession.

Yet they said, and I quote

“"The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."
On the long running "Tory meltdown" thread on NSC you had a poster repeatedly posting "plough them all into a ditch".

That poster is still on NSC and his posts weren't edited or cancelled. And that was because we could tell, using our brains, that he wasn't being entirely serious and that, after a while, it simply became a repeated, linguistic in joke. And that despite one of the mods being a card carrying Tory party member (and very nice feller who I'm very happy to spend time with and don't want to see literally ploughed into a ditch).

Social media is awful in its binary nature. The sooner it finds nuance the sooner the human race will actually develop their brains to something like they were in the 1990s when people read books, understood irony, were politically engaged without being tribal and generally didn't act like pearl clutching arses every time someone said something they disagreed with.

Yes, I know what you’re talking about and in fact called out that poster several times for using those exact words in that exact thread, simply because it calls for violence.

There are very few occasions where I’ve personally called for violence, and always with the aim of saving more lives. For example, if Putin got two in the back of the head, I wouldn’t shed a tear.

The difference between that user and a celebrity calling for literal murder is that celebrities have a duty of responsibility in the things they say and do which can influence the easily led. He isn’t going up on a stage in front of hundreds of people and calling for literal murder of a specific target.

And as I said before, like in the trans/woman thread, there is a big difference between protest, name calling and outright calls for violence/murder.

I really don’t think this is a complex issue. Don’t use rhetoric which calls for the murder of innocent civilians. This shouldn’t even be a debate.

I seemed to remember incurring fractions years ago including a ban when i suggested that the poster who persisted in using the shoot self emoji, should, it must have been obvious that i didn’t mean it….

Sorry, I've read that four times now and it still makes less sense than a four year old with a can of alphabetti spaghetti.

I had planned to see these guys in Berlin but their entire German tour has been cancelled. UK dates are now being pulled and their US tour is under threat as their visas are now invalid. The latter is due to their promoter (and visa 'sponosr') dropping them, and not Homeland Security getting involved....yet. UK festivals are now under pressure to drop them, I think the big talking point will be what happens with Glastonbury as there are calls to drop them.

I'm still trying to get my head around all of the different arguments and discussions: what's the issue with supporting Palestine, free speech, hate speech, cancel culture, when is sorry not enough, should some illadvised words when young define a lifetime, are there double-standards at play etc.

I do not think they're inherently bad people and, in one sense, I feel they're quite smart and they certainly raise some good points and causes; I do feel they could have chosen some of their words better though....note the use of past tense here as I am of the view they will not repeat them and are genuinely sorry.

I'm interested to know what the great and the good of NSC think.
they are being cancelled for their anti semitism

Cheers mate.
I was going to give them a listen . . . .

Edit: The sound is good.
But they have a bit of a whiff of goldy looking chain about them.

I prefer my white rappers to have a bit more originality and strength of message.
These are Austrian:

''Rediscover yourself, your pride, your dignity, your holiness, force and weakness, love and passion. Unknown power recharged my voice. Reconnect and rerespect yourself. Refind your roots, your family, your way. Identify, eye in eye with your enemy and say I am, Boris/ Sebastian/ May, nobody can bring me down. Push yourself, don´t think anyone else does it. and trust yourself, don´t think anyone else does it. Be a giant, great as you want, got it and follow your dreams, with one step forward, that's it. That's it.''..

Another excellent Austrian hip hop artist, but for completely different reasons is Yung Hurn, great fun.

I think it’s bizarre that people are trotting out the “free speech” argument as if anyone cares/is trying to silence some kind of political point they, or anyone else, are making as artists.

Incitement to murder is not free speech. It will never be free speech, I hope, in this country. Saying “I hate the Tories” is different to saying “Go out and murder your Tory MP”. Especially given that two have been murdered in recent years.

This isn’t a free speech issue, this is a legal issue of whether the CPS feel they would get a conviction of incitement to commit murder based on these statements alone.
Given we saw people correctly jailed in the summer for vile and rancid tweets, these guys should at least be having a chat with the Police.

The only good Tory is a dead Tory
Kill your local MP

Under any context isnt OK

You’re a genuine idiot if you think they were calling for people to be killed. But for the dullards at the back, they have clarified what they are about. You are entitled not to like their jokes and think it all in bad taste, fine don’t listen to their music. But this petty vindictive drive to want to see them prosecuted, or driven out of business or hurt in some other way I find pretty scary. The absolute state of petty authoritarians boring us all to death behind their twitching curtains

Okay cool

He used to loiter around my neck of the woods pre-Covid. Saw him perform a few times as well. He seems to have disappeared though.

Whilst there is certainly a discussion to be had around the implications and consequences of words....I feel you are at the very extreme end of this discussion. There is nuance, and context, in language, I feel you are missing this.
