Words have consequences.

It's right that they are losing bookings right now. That was an exceptionally stupid thing to say.

However, there's no reason this has to be for ever. Apology and stay away from political stuff in future. They've not done anything so bad there is no way back.

I am pleased to say I have never heard of Kneecap and though this thread might have some good advice for me,
as I had knee replacement surgery last week.
:lolol: Best wishes and hope you are recovering well.

I saw the news story and thought i would add the link as I imagine there are plenty on here that haven’t heard of this band. I have heard of them as I listen to Radio 6, not my thing though.

Cheers mate.
I was going to give them a listen . . . .

Edit: The sound is good.
But they have a bit of a whiff of goldy looking chain about them.

I prefer my white rappers to have a bit more originality and strength of message.
These are Austrian:

''Rediscover yourself, your pride, your dignity, your holiness, force and weakness, love and passion. Unknown power recharged my voice. Reconnect and rerespect yourself. Refind your roots, your family, your way. Identify, eye in eye with your enemy and say I am, Boris/ Sebastian/ May, nobody can bring me down. Push yourself, don´t think anyone else does it. and trust yourself, don´t think anyone else does it. Be a giant, great as you want, got it and follow your dreams, with one step forward, that's it. That's it.''..

...should some illadvised words when young define a lifetime...
When compared with NSC's age demographic they may seem young, but they're hardly the 20-22 year old Beastie Boys of Licensed To Ill fratboy notoriety.

Former teacher and balaclava owner DJ Próvaí (JJ Ó Dochartaigh) is 36. :)

Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó Cairealláin) is 30 and Mo Chara (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh) is 26.

They're old enough to speak for themselves and be accountable for their words and actions. And artistic freedom isn't consequence-free.

Musically, they're pretty good IMHO, especially when they link up with Fontaines of course.

Seen them twice now and plan to see them again in Amsterdam.

What's more stupid is that we have spent more time talking about this bollocks then the actual message they're trying to portray. No, they don't want people to murder their MPs.
What message are they trying to portray?

I read an interview with this mentioned and the band said people are missing the joke…….sorry it’s gone over my head but I haven’t listened to everything they have done or seen them live.

Yet they said, and I quote

“"The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."

What is this critical context people are missing, which will completely change the meaning of this statement? They themselves haven’t elaborated or attempted to explain this in way, shape of form, instead saying "an extract of footage, deliberately taken out of all context, is now being exploited and weaponised, as if it were a call to action".

If there were some magical explanation as to why this seemingly crystal clear statement has been misinterpreted, why won’t they say what it is?

Moreover, why apologise at all if they’ve done nothing wrong and this is all a silly misunderstanding?

No, what has happened here is they’ve potentially committed a quite serious crime, are being cancelled by promoters, and are bricking it.

Either a) they believe the things they’ve said and should be investigated by police, b) they don’t believe the things they’ve said, but are playing “characters” for shock value, and should be investigated by police or c) there is this fabled “explanation” as to how what they’ve said has been taken completely out of context, as they allege.

Oh calm down and stop clutching your pearls, will you. They are a bunch of kids, of course they are going to say inflammatory things. What kind of country do you want if anyone who actually exercises free speech gets punished for it? So much for North Korea. They aren't politicians who you hold to account, they are musicians!

Only cowardly institutions are cancelling their gigs, as soon as the Eden Project crumbled, they rebooked at another venue in the south-west. I'm looking forward to seeing them at the Wide Awake Festival in a few weeks.

Musical acts have always been offensive, Fat White Family said Kill MPs on twitter the other year, Kneecap just pissed off the wrong people in America. The whole world has had mental breakdowns over bands for decades. If you start censoring the arts its a long road. Don't necessarily agree with a lot of what they say, but don't know why other people care, your never going to listen to them and it won't affect you. Ultimately you've got a lot of people taking them very seriously for a group that have songs such as 'Rhino Ket' and sing about how 'sniffer dogs are shite/taking everyone's jobs'. It seems to be Free Speech until you decide that you don't agree with what is being said.

I think it’s bizarre that people are trotting out the “free speech” argument as if anyone cares/is trying to silence some kind of political point they, or anyone else, are making as artists.

Incitement to murder is not free speech. It will never be free speech, I hope, in this country. Saying “I hate the Tories” is different to saying “Go out and murder your Tory MP”. Especially given that two have been murdered in recent years.

This isn’t a free speech issue, this is a legal issue of whether the CPS feel they would get a conviction of incitement to commit murder based on these statements alone.

Is that what they meant though? That's the point, in the way of performance art what can be said?

These days...

As mentioned above, speaking out by going against the grain or being 'extreme' is nothing new. My mind goes back to 1992 with Ice-T's Bodycount brought out 'Cop Killer'. Now he's on primetime TV, still making music and was online mates with Boycie from OFAH.
