Clearly you cannot even read!

I actually said "Anyone who joins our armed forces these days is either desperate for a job, mad, or a complete mug!" So, what is there to "discuss"?

Just to clarify, my "mad" refered to "enjoy looking for a fight" type mad, and not "stupid" type mad. Clearly they come into the third group.

What other reason would there be for joining up to go to Afganistan?

Honour? Tradition?, Bravery?, wanting to do something for your country?

I kind of get your point but that its kids from low income and low social status with little hope of a job etc. Mate you should try living in Birkenhead, the Army have a massive tent in the middle of the shopping precinct all year round with guns and stuff for the local youth to play with. They recruit a huge amount from round here.

They do tend to come out as better people though, There is a brutal sense to it all. There have always been an underclass of people who make up the ranks. And thank God for them.

Clearly it was in the "small print", but it is only over the last few years when Blair slashed the forces, and looked for wars, that they were used as front line forces. They only ever used to be used if they had specialist skills that were needed, and then, I understand, after special permission had been obtained to mobilise them.

Do you really think she would be allowed to tell young children what she was out there? Needless to say she resign and is happy just being a teacher.

Perhaps it has escaperd your attention that the conflict in Iraq, as far as our forces fighting Saddam, is over. Our role there is supporting a new country with new leaders as it pulls itself back together. If she was machine gunning kids or dropping napalm on Hospitals I would agree with you 100% but she would be doing a lolt of meet and greets with Iraquis, seeing the ruons of the great Babylonian cultures, eating new things, touching the Tigris and the Euphrates.

Thats what I meant by enrichment. If she decided to stay as a schoolteacher and resign because she didnt actually want to serve her country unless it was on her own terms...well, your wifes best frend sounds like the Mug mate.

So, to sum things up, we were there being the world's police force again.

Have you suffered in some way? You certainly make yourself sound stupid.

Edit: just seen you live in Birkenhead - so clearly you must be suffering every day! lol

What a load of crap!

Anyone who joins our armed forces these days is either desperate for a job, mad, or a complete mug!We gave up our empire to stop "our boys" having to die to defend it - now we send tham to fight other peoples' wars anyway. WHY?
With a statement like that , you're the mug in my eyes.

Hmm. You might want to read back through the thread to see who comes across as ignorant and stupid. Cant be arsed to put up a poll...who is the biggest Bellend? Pork Pie or TranmereGull?...but I bet I could guess the result. You are of course right about Birkenhead...Thankfully I live in the "posh end" so life is good.

To join in this off topic binfest - I had the opportunity to talk to several serving officers about this and their consensus was pretty much:

We can make most of them into decent soldiers, but they pretty much all leave with more problems than they came in with.

This shows real ignorance..... RAF Regiment does regular mounted patrols right across the existing deployment zones.... they don't sit on the gates of Bastion smoking and generally having a 'good' war. A rock-ape was killed in the last week or so...... they are active, combat trained troops.

It was said tongue in cheek, but to answer your post, the RAF Regiment is known to the army and marines as the short range desert group, they mount patrols around bastion , sure that has its dangers, but they suffer none of the hardships or the the amount of time spent in contact that the boys (and girls) in the FOB's do, the only members of the raf regiment that do are the FAC's or the ones in sfsg, this is in no way meant to dishonour rockapes that have been killed or injured , but just look at the casualty figures for the army and marines and then compare them to the raf regiment.

PS No they dont.

people film anything these days eh :rolleyes

Its 2012, anything bad and in public will be filmed. Proof of this is those racist people filmed on the Tram and Tube in London, wouldnt have got so much attention if it wasnt stuck on Youtube and nothing would have probably been done either.

Lucky this doesnt happen as much now, this gets more attention then it comes back on the club and hits the fans who arent idiots the hardest. Pathetic this is. Also good the the Police seem to of sorted it quickly.

One of my pals is a Major in the Paras and he said the same thing. There is little in civvy street for the guys to get on with. Those fellas often get into drinking and all kinds of trouble when they are out. He reckons that all of them should go to a halfway house to get acclimatised to non military life and get trained for new careers..never happen tjhough because it would cost too much,

The only ones who get any support on the out these days are the ones whove had their f***ing legs and arms blown off...even then its been a fight to get those men and women sorted out properly. I suppose these are the "mugs" referred to by Mr. Pie.
