Jordan Rhodes to go out on loan

I think, were we to be offering the same money, we'd be more attractive than the majority of Championship clubs at any given time.

But footballers have short careers and think, quite rightly, in the here and now. They're not interested in "We're going to spend over the summer and have a squad that might be in contention next season, with a bit of luck", when there's another club out there who have a very decent chance of Premier League football in just five months time. It's why Sam Baldock came to us despite the confident pronouncements of most Bristol City fans. He knew Bristol City would go well in League One, and he *might* get a promotion, but he had the chance to return to the Championship straight away with us, so he took it, even though I'm sure City were offering him decent money.

I thought we were nowhere near the top payers in this league so I doubt we'd be paying the same money. I agree that we would need to be competitive in the Championship before a player like Rhodes would be remotely interested in joining us these days. We were a very attractive club both on and off the pitch when we first arrived in this league and we did seem to attract more high profile players than we now manage. I think Gus and a more gamble inclined TB would have been a reason too.

We are definitely also rans in this league at the moment.

I think you were an attractive team to players as it looked like possible promotion was round the corner, but agreed that's not there at the moment. I don't really think players look beyond a) Money and b) short term potential for promotion (and therefore more money). All talk of training facilities etc is largely irrelevant, especially as most teams have pretty good setups these days.

I think the last few transfer windows and the appointment of Hyypia have probably set us back a couple of years. This summer is really important, we need to make quality signings and start to move back up the table. Playoffs or promotion would be a major achievement from where we are now.

Entirely agree, I think you've gone from a team with several players that many other championship teams would covert to one with very few. it reminds me of us under Nigel, which is not a bad thing as that reset our financial position and allowed us to start building again without the burden of unsustainable losses. In fact, Hughton could be your Nigel, (he certainly has that slightly dour personality) but, on paper at least, should be better able to deliver more with less and help get the finances under control.

Could well be off to Middlesbrough now.

The club with tiny gates and the seemingly magic touch on FFP, who could sign Clayton, Vossen, and perhaps Rhodes ahead of us.

Poor that we can't compete with them.

I know, hence "If we were to be". It was in relation to somebody pondering whether we were attractive to players or not, all things being equal, which clearly they aren't.

It was said that he was going to Forest with them paying his wages how is that possible with their embargo due to failing FFP.

Forest wanted to pay part of his wages in a loan deal , under the FFP transfer embargo they can still sign a player who doesn't cost more than £11k a week in wages. If the embargo is lifted in the summer they could then sign him permanently for £8M (a recent back of the shirt sponsorship deal with ICM Capital until the end of the season looks extremely similar to what Leicester have done to claim they were within the FFP target for 2013/2014)

Can anyone put their hand on their heart and say that they can see us spending £8m on a player? Those times are long gone.

I'm obviously going to be in a minority here, but I never really rated Rhodes.

Scores lots of goals but he never looked much when he played at the Amex and I don't think his workrate is great. There must be a reason he isn't in the Blackburn team (personally I think Gestede is a far better all round player) and if he was as good as some make out he would have been a Premiership player ages ago.

One player who scores a load of goals in a team doesn't always make the team successful...

I must have missed that, when were we ever close to being able to spend that sort of money on a player?

Would we as the fans really want the club to splash that sort of cash on a single signing, especially given our recent history and nearly going out of business completely

This is true. But he appears to be a born goal poacher, and in a team that's on the fringe of success anyway he might make the difference between going up and staying down I guess.

With the 1901 renewals in summer 2016, we'd be wise to 'invest' cash next transfer window, in order to maximise the number of renewals, and the price they will pay.

FFP will be gone in a couple of years, that is why teams are not paying attention to it

Will it last that long, I doubt it. If I was an owner, especially foreign I would have the attitude that the amount of money I put into my club and possibly lose it, is my business and nothing to do with anybody else.

Middlesbrough and Forest are apparently now out of the running for signing Rhodes.

So he's off to Derby or Norwich then ???

Come on, Tony, get him signed up - think of your 1901 renewals at the end of next season.
