Extended his contract to 2026 a week ago. Very odd that he is then being linked to European clubs? I call BS.
The contract could be shenanigans to set an agreeable release clause for all parties (club, player and agent) in view of a European move. Every club in South America is a selling club, many only survive financially by developing and selling assets to Europe.

What would the work permit situation be? He has 4 caps for the USMNT and it seems 64 appearances for Internacional.
I thought I read he had played 104 times for them in the article?

That’s true but if we’ve been making enquires about this player and he is ‘interested’ in a European move, I’m not sure our recruitment team would be that happy about him signing a new contract last week. How many millions would that have put on the price overnight? Perhaps the agent and the club could benefit but we’ve allegedly walked away from a number of SA players in the past including this lad: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alan-velasco/profil/spieler/661154

The Premier League might not come calling again. The player should be doing his best to get here, not signing a new contract last week.

A lot of things could’ve happened with the contract though. The player may have had complicated ownership rights which have been consolidated, the contract may be a simple extension with improved wages but retaining the same release clause which has always been there.

As I say, would be very interested to hear Tim Vickery’s thoughts on this. I personally don’t think the new contract would be an issue (if we are even after him in the first place!).

Okay. Fine. I’ve heard he is an excellent sports scientist as his main career, specialising in treating the buildup of acid in the legs.

He’s a pro-for-lactic.

This one has an air of 'willy/won't he' about it 🤔

Hope we don't pull out of this one.
If we really are ‘in’, pulling out would seem very premature. I’m sure that the recruitment team will have the protection of having other targets who’ll they’ll having coming if we don’t pull this particular lad off.

He was on a contract that he signed when he was 18 and just breaking into the team. I'm sure he was being vastly underpaid to his value to the team. This contract likely bumps him up to the salary he is more deserving of and helps Internacional get the best deal for him in the summer.

Makes sense for both parties.

Yeah, I can't figure out why some sources have 104 and others seem to have 60+ ish.

But, I'm not at all familiar with how Brazilian leagues work. It seems that Internacional play in both Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and Campeonato Gaúcho, with the later being a regional league. So I think the 64 number is appearances in Série A, while the rest is in Gaúcho. Not sure how that counts as far as qualifying for a permit is concerned.

From Wikipedia:

Sport Club Internacional ..., is a Brazilian professional football club based in Porto Alegre. They play in the Série A, the first division of the Brazilian league, as well as in Campeonato Gaúcho Série A, the first level of the Rio Grande do Sul state football league.

'Eez complicated' seems about par for dealings with South America (ask United why they couldn't do a certain deal!) Fortunately we're rather good at doing it.
No idea if these rumours are BS or not - will patiently await developments (if there are any developments!)

I wonder if Joao Cardoso, down in Brazil, had any idea of what he would unleash by calling himself Johnny?
