its an excellent idea. [/B]

Some forward thinking schools in North London (I think) have been trying to get of contracts with food suppliers (and cook their own food) for a while so technically not an original idea.

The same problem of course exists in hospitals, where it's also important that the "clients" are properly nourished.

But I can see that the programme has widened the public's attention to the problem.

Most shocking is the attitude of the parents in my opinion.

He's alright on that programme but an absolute knob in those Sainsburys adverts, looks like a right twat. No need for the shite Toploader backing tracks as well.Plus he aint a Cockney.

To be honest - I'd loved the programme :lolol:

But I've got such a problem with the way he "sold himself" to Sainsburys. So hypocritical to care about the "state of the nations food" now.

I like the fact he is bringing it to light that the authorities are happy for the kids to eat sh1t, but as somebody on here said he promotes some poor supermarket food so the question arises does the right know what the left hand is doing.

I like his cook books, dislike his band, like his wife and eny his money. Who does he support?

Three specific problems about his Sainsburys adverts..

Walking through a field to promote some sausages.

Why a field ? Are the sausages free range ? No they are not.

Promoting farmed Salmon that he wouldn't dare sell in his restaurant.

The company producing it has also been criticised and fined by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency for it's practices.

My personal favourite - the extra special range being cooked by a "Chef" in a kitchen. As if.... !!!

( I think Sainsburys have dumped the ad agent now )

Why does Sainsbury's food equal shit?

The big supermarkets are villains for lots of reasons but you can get lots of healthy stuff there too. It all depends what YOU choose to put in your basket. Nothing is bad for you in MODERATION.

The problem with supermarkets is not so much the quality of the food they sell, but the way they have manipulated the market.

They also sell some very cheap crap food (bit like schools)

I'd be interested to see whether any food available in Sainsburys has been sourced from the same suppliers as featured in the programme.

I thought hima tosser - but this school dinners and the previous training chefs programme make me think he is a top, top bloke. I can forgive him the Sainsburys ads where everyone was dancing around in the kitchen where he was cooking a stir-fry (as if).

I saw the programme last night - it's too big a task for him - but you'd have thought dinner ladies might have known a little about food preparation ..................... and you'd have thought it might give Greenwich (and all other local authorities) food for thought.

Lets get this in perspective. He has done more that just a few adverts. He is effectively the public face of Sainsburys.

I have so much respect for Jamie Oliver when AFTER his contract with Sainsbury's has run out - he does the same job on what parents are buying and dishing up for their kids at home. (starting in Sainsburys).

I saw the interview with the food supplier (in the first or second programme?), essentially saying that they are just supplying what the market wants.

The supermarkets would argue they are doing just the same by selling low quality chicken nuggets.

These are ending up in kids meals at home - someone must be buying them.

It's the quality of the food AND the way that they have manipulated the market.

Of course, they push processed stuff as that's where the high margins come from but their 'fresh' food leaves a lot to be desired too: salad leaves bleached to death, produce over-chilled, a desire of uniformity over taste (why can't we get the ugly-looking tomatoes that you get in France - the ones that taste superb? Supermarkets would rather have perfect round, red beasts that taste like cotton wool) and an unispired selection of food.

And that's not even starting on the junk crap.

It's not just Sainsbury's, it's all the supermarkets. And they always say that it's customer choice, but that's nonsense, when I come home at 7.30 tonight, where else can I shop?

But, for what it's worth, I think Jamie's doing a great job, good on him.

I cant believe that parents who complained that their kids were being fed decent food though.

I shop in supermarkets...

but.. I buy fruit and veg from a local market and try to use local shops when I can.

I only ever buy organic meat (wherever I shop). I never knowingly eat non organic meat.

I posted on here a while back that Sainsburys are going to kill off the local shops in Clapham because they have opened a Sainsbury's local 100 yards away from their Superstore.

Our Sainsburys closes at 10 in the evening. People who can't be bothered to WALK 10 MINS from Clapham North tube station have been given a mini Sainsbury's nearer. They now have a 5 MINUTE WALK but will have to pay higher prices than the superstore.

Come on imagine that. A Sainsburys next door to a Sainsburys !

Two local shops will know probably go out business. Sainsburys have effectively targetted those shops and said no, you are not even allowed to co-exist with our superstore. Our prices are lower - but people still used your shop.

No, we'll have your business too.

That is very, very difficult to defend. It's crazy. If you think I'm an anti supermarket looney - please defend that.

I have no problem with the concept of supermarkets (I shop in them!) but have a problem with the way they are allowed to operate at the moment. They need to be controlled.

.. and three quarters of the population AGREE with me according to a recent poll.

They are screwing suppliers. They set the costs of what they buy (not the other way round)

fish!chciken!

fresh ?

Not unless you buy organic chicken (which doesn't contain any additives or has not been frozen and refrozen a number of times). Fish bought in supermarkets is also likely to have been frozen for a while.

Depends what your definition of fresh is.

Also those bags of salad look REALLY fresh don't they. Wonder how they do that ?

They remove a lot of oxygen from the air in the bags and wash the leaves in chlorine. Not surprisingly the nutional value is adversely affected.

This explains why these bags have only been around for a while.

It's easy to whack a load of salad in a plastic bag, but the technology to keep the stuff "green looking" has only just caught up !
