unbeatble stuff.

You're not wrong. It's only sold in halves and for a very good reason.

I'm not sure I have ever been quite so drunk as I was after my first experience of it. Absolutely loopy juice.

Ahhhhh... Thatchers.

The only worthwhile product that family has ever come up with.

Living next door, as I do, to Middle Farm (home of the pretentiously, but accurately, named "National Collection of Cider and Perry"), I am spoilt for choice.

They normally have over 200 different ciders in stock. Samples of most of them can be tasted free of charge before purchase.

Marvellous scenes.

I'll be round soon

I keep the Strongbow taps flowing freely around Shoreham - cider season is always open according to my calendar...

although there is an organic pub in Brighton somewhere that serves an amazing medium dry cider - worth a visit again - if I could remember where it was  :jester:

I have not touched a drop of cider in 10 years since I was sick one christmas eve after drinking lager, red wine and then cider. In that order. Naturally I blamed the cider. Maybe its time to bury the hachet and have a pint. Always smelt like sick to me though.

Glad you mentioned Thatchers Lord Bracknell, how could I forget that beast of a drink, it is actually made in a village called Sandford, not 4 miles from where i live here in North Somerset, Bozza and Tony Le Mesmer would know where i mean and will both surely have tried it.

Real brain damage....

Where's Sonic the Hedgehog aka Apples when you need him?

I wasn't around yesterday, but I'm back now.

Definitely a 365 (or 366) day season for me.

And if I ever find the b*****d who nicked my Strongbow when I was in the pub on Sunday...

Morning, Sonic - didn't think you'd be able to resist this thread! As for nicked Strongbow, never mind , I expect you had a few reserve cans of Scrumpy Jack tucked away at Hedgehog House...

Indeed I do. And on this note, I may just pop into the shop at the Thatchers brewery today to do a little 'shopping'...

The cider nowadays is absolute crap. And the Government can be blamed for this, or Europe perhaps, as it my taxing the alcohol content rather than the specific gravity changes that the cider has to be killed in the cask and is not still fermenting.

Thatchers is the only decent cider I have had at beer and cider festivals. Bulmers (if you can get it) still make a drinkable cider but the purists will not like it. From the cask, there is no decent cider that comes out of a bottle.

Some pure ciders are sour, and fizzy ciders give me the burbs and fill me up before I have had enough alcohol. Beware the unknown names and very small cider manufacturers for the legal stuff. Cider has a short shelf life and some of these are past their sell-by date. Farm cider still fermenting in the cask is great, but not legal in pubs.

This is a very serious thread. The last time I drunk out of a wooden cask cider in a pub in Shoreham was way back in 1974.

Even if the cider is killed and then a caster put in to liven it up, that is OK by me. I am not quite sure of the technical details. I have made cider by putting the smashed apples, water, yeast, sugar in a dustbin and waiting for the reaction.

Unfortunately not. These were my bottles I'd bought in the supermarket for home consumption.

Are there any decent cider pubs in Brighton to Worthing?

I don't mean just a black plastic tub on the counter that is purporting to be real cider and it is, but it is often sour and clear and poor quality like many of the ciders that are left over at beer festivals.

The best cider pub I have ever been in is the Cider bar in Newton Abbott (Devon), a short walk from the station and a long walk back. the second best was the King's Head in Shoreham, closed in 1983 though. Even the Cider bar do not brew in wooden casks, but there are huge wooden casks behind the counter and I expect the cider is piped in. (On the grounds that the casks would be too big to lift up and down.)

The Full Moon in Brighton used to sell decent cider. Lots of pubs in Devon.

What was that pub near Brighton Station that used to sell Merrydown? Also sold real ale. circa 78/79?

Is Merrydown still going?

I have never drunk a decent pint of Merrydown. Some people like it. I tastes of nothing to me.

I think there is a cider pub in the centre of Worthing? Or rather a pub that sells cider? In the days of decent cider (and this does not include Merrydown) there were pubs that sold virtually nothing but cider.

Even the local off licence could get you a wooden cask of cider, later plastic casks.

Do Thatchers sell private customers with casks of cider?

If I remember rightly, the wooden casks used to be 6 gallons or 48 pints, and it was about 7% (I think Thatchers is 7½%) which is well OK, not too strong, but strong enough. About two third the strength of a bottle of wine, so three pints is easy going, four pints and nobody can understand your slurred speech unless they are keeping up, and five pints is a prolonged session after hours or an afternoon bint.
