It was explained to me by someone who had a brush with the professional game - but whose father was a League player/manager how fullback was the most important position for footballing sides.
I was (and likely would still be) of the persuasion that your best player goes up front - but it did all make sense.
Personally I think the most important player is the goalkeeper, followed by the strikers, centerbacks and midfield, wingers then fullbacks. I'd rather have a weak full back than weak keepers or strikers. It was explained to me by someone who had a brush with the professional game - but whose father was a League player/manager how fullback was the most important position for footballing sides.

Definitely. Especially with Calderon - when you look at the videos he put up on YouTube (here), you realise just how much we used him to start/build our attacks. He's such a good outlet. And Painter does a very good job of it on the other wing as well. At the back end of last season we certainly emphasized the importance of good full backs, more so than with any other team I've seen. Some of the thinking was that possession always starts with them. No hoof-ball from the keeper. And they provide the width that opens up the pitch.
