Depends which lens you are viewing it through, my Irish partner wouldn't agree.
I wouldn’t disagree with her.

Every empire has been built on the misery of other nations.

This map makes no historical sense and there is no continuity for most of these countries. Nation states really are quite a modern concept. This map was probably created by Dominic Sandbrook - Alexei Sayle reckons that his knowledge is entirely stuff his mum told him.
Yes. I hate nationalism in all it's forms, be it British Nationalism, English, Welsh, German. I hate it for many reasons but one of its 'goals', preserving a monoculture within that particular entity - That's not how we evolved it's not how the world developed, we're all immigrants and all mongrels.

Is there anything more elegantly designed than an OS map?

(Yes, the spitfire, but you know what I mean)
Talking of elegance and mapping....

Never knew this until now. Always thought it sunk on its maiden voyage.

With the possible exceptions of Italy and Switzerland, I'm not sure there's a single country there where the year is accurate.

Edit: actually, I just made a very quick check on Wikipedia and 1300 definitely isn't right for Switzerland. I'm not even sure what that's referring to.

But yes, Italian unification was in 1861. So they got that right.
