Reading this just reminds me (yet again) why I stopped going to Palace away. The play-off semi was the last time I went. Always grim. I suppose if you want a throw-back to the 70s/80s, fair enough. But this nostalgia for a “real football” experience (which the media hype up when swooning over Selhurst and its atmosphere) is not for me. I’ve been delighted to discover that “real football” still exists at places like Forest, where the ground is old-school, and the atmosphere is genuine. Friendly people. Great pubs. Lovely club.
Despite my years it was my first time at Selhurst.

The behaviour of the Albion fans kettled to the ground was pathetic.
The behaviour of the Albion fans in the ground was pathetic.
The behaviour of the Albion fans kettled away from the ground was pathetic.

I just can't quite find the word to sum up my experience of the game.

Or it could just be a stated fact.

NSC is so odd sometimes, with the way it picks up on one completely well-meaning and innocent comment and won’t let up. It’s almost as if people are somehow accusing @Giraffe of being a racist.
It reads really badly tbf. Totally unnecessary to describe folks complaining about racism as "sober and lefty". Why do this if not insinuating that these are characteristics somehow associated with challenging racism.

This is the sort of crap all decent minded people have to put up with these days. It is stoked by the ongoing culture war; at least he he didnt call it woke I guess.

No I'm not. It might have been well meaning but I have plenty of friends who are neither left wing nor sober, yet somehow get through all our away games without calling a linesman a coon.

None of that for me, did you arrive quite close to kick off? I travelled via selhurst Station with all the smelly fans, no escort from there
It was the 18:08 of Hassocks however we were delayed on route to Norwood Junction

That's true about the LA lads as I was one of them back in the day.
We never got on with the Maybridge lads but when we went to watch The Albion we all went as one.
This in fighting is purely fuelled by Cocaine etc.
It's a problem that won't go away and will only get worse sadly.
I think it was easier with unallocated standing and seating and the fact that the same 2-300 would do long distance games and the same 1500 or so would do nearer ones. You had to get on to an extent because you'd see the same people in two weeks time.

Our group never went looking for trouble but it would occasionally find you and then you had to stick together.

Incidentally, I had a nostalgic 'moment' on Amsterdam Centraal platform when I "saw double" if you know what I mean

The last league away game I went to was West Ham away last season, before that Wolves away promotion season. At Wolves I was chatting to loads of old faces had a great day. West Ham away I didn’t bump into anyone I knew or recognised from the past. Went to Arsenal away in the cup and thought Christ what a bunch of arrogant fuckwits follow the club away now. Old folk complaining they couldn’t see due to persistent standers told to F off when asked if they could sit down.
As a young gun I wasn’t an angel although I would never of disrespected an older fan and as others have said we looked out for each other back then.

Following on from my previous post, Amsterdam was quite odd for me because I saw a lot of the old faces but most couldn't get a ticket. The Eurostar over was like a trip back in time on a train to somewhere up North.

There's still a group of my mates that do most of the aways and we've met a group of younger lads who are great fun so away days are still ok, but it took the Dam for me to realise how many had stopped doing aways.

Loads more coke and 'getting the badge in' on social media these days too.

On the train out of dodge I ended up in with a group of lads.
For all I know had I seen any of them in the previous 3 hours, I'd have branded them and their actions as 'pathetic'.

Yet with it all out of their system, they were polite, chatty, funny and a credit to themselves and influences.

The whole situation with 'us and them' is inexplicably ridiculous.

Sorry everyone. I did post that very late at night at the end of a long day. Not the best choice of words. It was more a comment on the way they were than the fact they were calling out racism.
Fair enough.

To be clear, I just wanted to make the point that not being racist is really a starting point for being a decent person, whatever else you do or believe in.

I agree. Of course it is. Very badly worded in my case. I’ve never heard a single racist comment at a Brighton game. I really never have. I’d be as appalled as these guys were if the phrase quoted by someone, after my post, was used. Disgusting.

Unfortunately there's every chance there are separate issues, as the fella calling out racism, which then led to the fight was adamant the accused had used more 'modern' racist abuse on 3 occasions.

The away seating thing started in our experience in the Hughton Championship years, 20 year olds somehow harvesting a stack of tickets then demanding that huge groups of them hogged a row. Zero manners or discussion.

Agree about that middle aged blokes thing. Age for some doesn’t diminish the Neanderthal genes when topped up with Cocaine.
It did work though to the extent that it brought the louder, most vociferous fans together for singing. If you didn't want to stand and sing then there was always seats to be had down the front or on the extremities. If everybody sat down in their allocated seats then I'm sure there would be many bemoaning the lack of singing / support / atmosphere.

As we have seen with the North Stand, the atmosphere is not as good as it could be because you have small dispirate groups spread throughout the stand trying to get songs started (often different songs, at the same time). To me, it makes perfect sense for the more vocal support to be grouped together when we are away.

I used to go away a fair bit from mid 70s through to the 90s (but only infrequently in past 20 years) and I've never seen any blue on blue scrapping. The odd row between individuals now and then, but no real scrapping.
