I'm going to have to say this. If Palace lose out on a European place for an ownership cock up that would have been condoned by EUFA had it involved Chelsea or Citeh, then I will feel for them.

Not every club can have an ownership that have their finger on all the pulses.
And the owners were probably more surprised by the cup win than the rest of us.
So cut them a bit of slack EUFA.

It is fairytale stories like this that make the Europa league the fantastic competition we all know and love.

There’s a fair amount of chat online that even if they drop out Europa they would take the conference league spot and Brondby miss out, as dropping from a higher competition trumps league position…..

League position trumps a Cup win is my understanding. ???

Bondby would need to have finished 13th. They didn't.
It's unclear - as ever! https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regula...f-the-competition/multi-club-ownership-Online

The way it is all worded, it talks about 'a UEFA club competition' - not 'the specific UEFA club competition'. And reading 5.02a - it says that the club that stays in is the club which qualifies on merit for the most prestigious competition.

Now, if it were the case that Palace would simply be shifted to the Conference, the clause would be otiose - because if two clubs owned by the same person qualified for, and were allowed to compete in, two different competitions - there would be absolutely no purpose for 5.02a. It strikes me that if they decide Palace cannot compete in the Europa, I don't think they'd be able to compete in the Conference either.

But then it has this.

Which seems to imply the opposite. That, 'exceptionally' a club may be shifted down the competitions. So, in that case - it could well be the case that Palace get shifted into the conference and take precedence over Brondby by virtue of 'qualifying' for a more prestigious competition.

It wouldn't be their spot to take, they didn't finish high enough in the league

BBC update;

Crystal Palace are expected to have to wait until the end of the month to find out if they are able to play in the 2025-26 Europa League, according to sources with knowledge of the process.
The Eagles hierarchy travelled to Switzerland on Tuesday to discuss with Uefa officials about their participation in the competition.
Uefa rules forbid individuals from having control of more than one club in the same competition to avoid conflicts of interest.
Eagle Football - the multi-club group owned by John Textor which includes a minority shareholding in Palace - owns a majority stake in Ligue 1 side Lyon, who have also qualified for next season's competition.
Palace are arguing that Textor - who has repeatedly tried to sell his stake with the club - does not have decisive control.
League places are used to determine who gets to play in the competition and given the French side finished sixth, they get priority over Palace, who ended 12th in the Premier League.
The original feeling was that the decision about their participation would come in the next week but sources now say that a ruling will come towards the end of June.

How did Palace get here?

Palace qualified for the Europa League by beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup.
Lyon finished sixth in the French top flight to initially gain a spot in the Conference League, but were promoted to the Europa League competition after Paris St-Germain - already qualified for the Champions League - won the Coupe de France.
Through Eagle Football, Textor - who initially invested £90m into Crystal Palace in 2021 - owns around 45% of the club and 90% of Lyon.
The American was appointed a director and joined co-owner Steve Parish, Josh Harris and David Blitzer on the board.
In January 2022, he invested in Brazilian club Botafogo and Belgian side RWD Molenbeek. Eagle Football still has controlling interests in both sides.
He became the owner of Lyon in June 2022.
Because Eagle Football has only has a 45% stake in Palace, the club is not part of the group's multi-club organisation. Palace have not signed a player from any of those clubs, although Jake O'Brien, now at Everton, did move to Lyon from their academy.
Textor has tried to purchase a controlling stake in Palace in the past because it is thought he would prefer to have overall control of the club.
However, he has more recently tried to buy Everton and also sought a buyer for his Palace shares.
In an interview with the BBC last year, he said he does not run Palace - chairman and co-owner Parish does - although he can share his views.
He also conceded the pair disagree on their views over multi-club ownership.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis recently diluted his control at the club by placing his shares in a blind trust, when it looked like both Forest and Olympiakos - another club the Greek businessman owned - may both qualify for the Champions League.
But sources close to Eagle Football believe putting those Palace shares in a 'blind trust' is not an option because Textor and Eagle Football do not have decisive influence over the Selhurst Park outfit.
Crystal Palace and Uefa have both been approached for comment.

To be fair, I am rather touched by the general perception of the sincerity of my empathy with the Palace faithful.

Shouldn't we have a separate thread for all those who "feel sorry" for Palace if they get kicked out of Europe for failings entirely of their own making? Their ownership couldn't be arsed to read, or couldn't understand. the clear rules that our owner had to adhere to.

This is Palace. We really don't need an orchestra of violins.

All of which goes to show that UEFA are as much to blame as anybody else for this farce by making their rules so insanely complicated!

It isn't complicated. A shareholder can only hold 30% share of any club, and if it is higher then it must be put right by March of the season. It doesn't matter if the shareholder, director or whatever has any say on the board, it is the percentage of holdings.

No, not buying that as cheating, unless that also includes the name changes that brighton have undergone recently

Oh, sorry, I am sure they are all legitimate and above board, as Brighton are such a well run club

So no Europe for us next season, and congratulations in advance for winning the Conference league next season.

Until then, have you ever seen the Brighton win a cup?

(and if the rules just stated that, without all the extra bumph they've shovelled in, it wouldn't be complicated!)

But you are ignoring the point that all players cheat, and some get away with it. Can you seriously hand on heart tell me that no Brighton player has ever cheated, whether caught or not? All players do it, bernardo dived and got away with it, Henderson handled the ball and got away with it
I don't agree with you that ALL players cheat, but given you're a Palace fan and used to watching your players cheat week in, week out I forgive you for thinking that.

You now seem to be in agreement that Henderson cheated, and condone that because "all players cheat". If I follow your logic, you seem to be suggesting that every player can cheat all of the time and the success or failure of said policy is purely defined on whether they get away with it.

It's almost as if watching Zaha for a decade, diving multiple times every match and accepting yellow cards as an occupational hazard, has distorted your perception of right and wrong.

Can you imagine being a Brondby fan, thinking you're in Europe, and then finding out that due to some f*ck up by Crystal Palace you get chucked out and replaced by the very team that made the f*ck up!
