My experience is pretty good. I have dealt with specialist recruitment agencies and find them to be helpful, relatively bullshit free and most importantly know their market very well.

Trouble is at times I guess is that people think they are suited to a role and the agent has more information and knows that the candidate isn't either because their skillset is lacking or they are not the right fit for a company.

My two-pennyworth anyway

The trouble is a lot of 'Specialist Recruitment Consultants' don't know a thing about the industry they're recruiting for.

I am a 'Specialist' Recruitment Consultant. I quite like me. Sometimes I bend the rules a bit and do things I shouldn't in order to make a placement. Sometimes I get completely screwed over by candidates. It equals itself out. Despite what people may think though, it's f***ing hard, Much harder than you would think.

Disagree. They wouldn't be around very long if that were true, hence the fact they are specialist.

I am a specialist Social Work Reruitment Consultant. I know f*** all about Social Work. I do know shit loads about finding Social Workers' jobs though, if that makes sense.

I'm sure you're right but I can assure you that after dealing with IT 'Recruitment Specialists' a whole lot of them wouldn't know a computer if it hit them in the face. I doubt that it's unique to IT either. The problem with this is that my CV often gets overlooked as although I have done all I can to simplify it a lot of them have very little idea what it's all about and thus I get ignored.

It certainly means long hours often talking to people who don't want to talk to you, this I know.

I have just got a new job. I used to be a recruitment consultant and now I'm going to be an estate agent. I have viewed all the threads about the good, bad and ugly opinions on recruitment consultants and wondered if you thought this was a better move?

Personally I think recruitment is a fine line of work but I know that others have a different view.

Give the guy a chance ! good luck buddy who did you get a job with?

Well done mate in getting a job!

It just shows that even in the current market there are decent jobs and careers out there. Now don't be silly and spend your first pay packet on something sensible - go and buy an albion season ticket instead?

Thanks. I would buy a season ticket if I didn't now have to work on saturdays. The sacrifices you have to make to earn a living. :(

I can only speak of my experience in the IT industry and although there are some good ones there are a lot of charlatans.

On the other hand I think potential candidates could help by only going for jobs they can actually do and employers could help by actually knowing what they want!
