I have just got a new job. I used to be a recruitment consultant and now I'm going to be an estate agent. I have viewed all the threads about the good, bad and ugly opinions on recruitment consultants and wondered if you thought this was a better move?

Personally I think recruitment is a fine line of work but I know that others have a different view.

Well the pay must be shit if you've moved across to an estate agents. Unless you own the estate agency.

You might just as well have posted "I am a Palace fan and have recently taken up paedophilia as a hobby" for the reactions you will now get on this thread.

Good luck.

You're either :

a) very brave
b) very stupid
c) very drunk
d) all of the above

To have made that statement on here.

Good luck !!!!

Can someone explain why working in recruitment is so bad? I only have a passing idea of it as being a service to help unemployed people find work. Why is that so bad?

Strangely enough, there are good recruitment consultants and bad ones. Like there are good estate agents and bad ones and good publicans and bad ones.

There are also good candidates who make a recruitment consultants job both easier and pleasurable and bad candidates who make a recruitment consultants job nigh on effing impossible.

Takes all sorts.

You need to take a balanced view of this. As in any walk there are good Estate Agents and there are bad Estate Agents. Also, there are good Recruitment Consultants and there are bad Recruitment Consultants. Factor in that in both cases there are good and bad agencies in both fields.

Naturally you seldom hear about a good Estate Agent or Recruitment Consultant, after all, not many people would be interested. Given the tabloid mentality of so many people in this country we tend to take note of the negative side of thing. For example, Katie Price is making a lot more headlines now she's divorcing than she did when she got married.

Right now it's not that good a time for Recruitment Consultants given the lack of jobs and I've heard from quite a few of them about how often they get messed about by both Employers and Prospective Employees. There's two sides to any story after all.

Oh, for the record most of the recruitment agencies I've worked for in the last year have been shit. Three of them I had to threaten legal action against to get paid and another who did not pay me for SIX WEEKS. Nature of the beast I'm afraid.

Stop being so nice :p

My personal experience is that they are useless. I was made redundant early last year - despite 100's of emails and phone calls not one agency ever bothered to inform me about how the applications I'd made for new jobs had gone.

In fact only last month one phoned me up and said "we've got the perfect job for you" - so you waited 18 months to contact me !!!!! Complete waste of space in my opinion ( and don't even start me on the fake job vacancies they place to get your CV ! )

Oh, forgot to mention, I've used them as an employer as well to try and fill vacancies. Because most are too lazy to actually read a CV and speak to the candidate, instead they use word matching software, they tend to send CVs for people that are totally inappropriate - why the hell should my company pay 10 - 15% of the salary for service like that ?

Pretty easy solution tbh. If you used an agency and they sent inappropriate candidates, don't use them again.

I have worked for 3 recruitment companies and none used word matching software. None of them put forward a candidate without the consent of the individual either so one would have to speak to them about the role prior to their details reaching the client.

There is no way on earth that we could justify our fee if we simply spammed you with every Tom, Dick or Harry that has sent in a CV, nor would we ever successfully place anyone in a position by doing so.

Maybe if employers were a little more proactive in choosing the correct rec company based upon the efforts made on their behalf then these lazy ones you refer to would have to either improve or find an appropriate vocation.

In fairness two things. I don't know about other industries but I know that the posts I apply for tend to attract 200-300 applications. Many of the applicants are totally unsuitable and that's not counting the ones that lie about their skills and experience. You also get quite a few even now who will apply for a job and having seen the salary or hourly rate tell the recruiter that whilst they're interest in the job they couldn't possibly work for that much.

Estate Agents also have good and bad clients. Some buyers make totally unrealistic offers and some sellers try to haggle over the fee. Factor in the people who genuinely aren't interested in buying they just want to have a nose round other people's homes.

Two sides to the story aren't there ?

Interesting so far. I took voluntary redundancy from my last job which I had been successful at for 5 1/2 years. It was a good company with loyal clients who I worked with throughout that time. The business got very very tough as many companies were not recruiting. The reason I have gone to an estate agent is that I can take my skill of dealing with people in sometimes stressful situations into another industry. I used to work for a small family type company and I am going to another similar one. I hope it will work out well.

Comments have been interesting and not altogether surprising but what people forget is that all these services exist because people need them. I have moved many times and used mostly good agents. In fact when they are good I have been surprised at how little it has cost. Any buyer of services needs to make sure they instruct the right person or company for what ever they are buying. The good are out there but are often over shadowed by the bad.

ps. I'll never be a Palarce supporting paedophilia but it did make me laugh!

My experience is pretty good. I have dealt with specialist recruitment agencies and find them to be helpful, relatively bullshit free and most importantly know their market very well.

Trouble is at times I guess is that people think they are suited to a role and the agent has more information and knows that the candidate isn't either because their skillset is lacking or they are not the right fit for a company.

My two-pennyworth anyway
