Following on from Digweed Trousers assertion that Scotland are in a 'period of transition', I thought it would be interesting to ask how long that period will last!

They are working towards the ambition of beating Faroes, Outer Hebrides or Iceland, and expect to manage one of those in the next.....oooh......12 years?
They are practising against another small island that has only gannets (and a pair of guillemot, but only in the spring). The gannets have drawn with Scotland in two friendlies, but the sweaties are looking stronger during nesting season.

The only thing is all the time they are shite, it gives them more to moan about. Not sure what they can do with the third chip as there is already one on each shoulder.

Maybe they just over-performed throughout the 70s and 80s then hav a few hurrahs in the 90s without ever looking like qualifying from their finals groups.
When I first started watching football there were always a couple of Scots in every decent squad, now the only one who does anything in the Premiership is Barry Ferguson and there is no guarentee he will be the same player after injury.

I think Scotland are now at the stage where they can give up any pretense of being an International football team. Instead, they should concentrate their efforts on travelling the world as a kind of crap Harlem Globetrotters team, bringing joy and laughter into the lives of football fans everywhere with their attempts at playing The Beautiful Game.
That own goal off the keepers arse last night was pure genius. Even the Scots surpassed themselves with that one, and it just goes to show that even now, they are still capable of reaching dizzying new heights of ineptitude and incompetence. This is a rare talent which should be nurtured and allowed to grow so we can all enjoy it for years to come.
I am far more excited at the prospect of Scotland v Slovenia than any England World Cup qualifier now. England are so dull in comparison. I have seen the light, and it is tartan.

They don't even look like coming out of the slump at the moment do they? Hungary's third goal last night (which if anybody didn't see it was a jock defender kicking it against the goalkeeper and rebounding into the net), was one of the funniest things I have seen for a while.

Harsh, I do not really delight in English failure. I would far rather ahve something slightly more uplifting to think about than SAn MArino soring after 9 seconds, (sorry!!) but it is more than anything a bit of banter.
In this type of forum I think we can all have a laugh at other misfortune as long it is never too personal or nsty.
Some Scots are bitter twisted bigots, as are some Irish, Welsh, English, Peruvian and Aussies.
So please, everyone on North Stand Chat, can I officially state here, that away from sport, which is not the end of the world, it is always just a game, however we may feel sometimes, I do not hate England.
It has provided my family with a degree of prosperity, friends, cricket and up there with the family, my now beloved Albion who I have watched for 25 years.
I love my country very much. I grieve to see us suffer as we did last night. It makes me sad to hear some people talk back in Scotland, their views can be bigoted, and occasionally cringeowrthy.
I miss the places of my childhood, fishing at Balmaha, Bank Holidays in Oban, Summer Camps on the isle of Sky.
However I love Sussex with perhaps as much passion and verve as i do Scotland.
Torn between the lover and the love you leave behind, would sum it up perhaps.

Yes DT I'd class you as a 'decent' Scot and for the sake of people like you I hope Scotland can get their act together and go back to being, well if not up there with Brazil, Italy, etc at least being better than Norway, Denmark etc. In fact back to the level where England are which is not admittedly very high but I'm sure you'd swap positions at the moment!
Just editing to say I've got no problems with banter. If you want to laugh because San Marino scored after 9 seconds or because Seaman watched the ball sail over his head against Brazil that's all in the game.

Frankly, i couldn't care less. The teams that i want England to repeatedly beat are france, germany and argentina. How scotland do is of no consequence.

Actually, we do have some half decent players coming through. Fletcher is a good player as is McFadden. Pearson's not bad. Webster, who had a mare last night is only 22 and will be a good defender in time. As for Marshall, he is not half as good a goalkeeper as Craig Gordon of Hearts. Marshall played last night for the full 90 mins partially to give him a full game, partially to assuage the Weegie media/public. Gordon will become the no 1 Scots goalie within the next couple of years and will probably be playing in the Premiership before long. He is only 22 and has learned a lot from Niemi, now regarded as about the best goalie in England. Hearts have had a long line of international goalies (their last regular goalie not to have been capped was in about 1980) and Gordon is regarded as being better than any of them apart from Niemi. He has the potential to be as good if not better than Niemi and in this team will have plenty of practice.
What we desperately need to uncover is someone to score goals at international level. Neither Miller or Crawford have got it at this level. I am also coming round to the view that Vogts must go. The team were doing ok last night until half time (dubious pen decision) and the team had good shape. Berti ditched it and the whole thing went tits up. The good news is that although we have a number of woeful results recently none of them (Holland away apart) have been in competitive fixtures. I would not rule us out completely of qualifying for Deutschland 2006.
