Has there ever been a hospital near Preston park? or actually in Preston? Existed in 1872 at least, or some sort of psychiatric home or similar? Google search doesn't turn up anything.

There was I believe a Sanatorium around these parts in the 1860's.

One of the black and white photos of the Race Hill workhouse shows the lunatic block , is this where the local term "H block" came from ? If so is it purely coincidental we had a "H block" at Withdean ?

Probably not a workhouse. This person was the daughter of a very rich family in Hove. I am trying to workout how she live in Hove but had her death registered in Preston (where she is now buried)

Where St Johns or St Peters?(Preston Manor)

Did she die in Preston or was her death registered in Preston? I don't remember finding a hospital or sanitarium in the parish when I studied the area as a historian ( amateur)

Possibly registered in Preston, but I can't work out why. She was from hove, well at least lived there. It made no real sense unless she died in Preston somewhere.

Also, it is highly unlikely she was a lunatic. I checked census records from 1871 (about a year before she died) and she was not a lunatic, or listed on there at least. She was still in her home in hove.

A sanatorium in the 19th century would have looked after patients with long term illnesses , given that the family was rich she may have been placed there if she had contracted an illness like TB or smallpox etc and didn't survive.

Great, now I need to find where this sanatorium was in Preston in 1872!

There you go then. The death register was held at st. Peters and st Paul's Preston until the church went out of use. She will have been resident somewhere on the edge of Hove/Preston.

It was a Sanitorium. There was one in Portslade as well, Foredown Tower. My grandmother is listed there as a child in the 1910 census.

Ooh...where? I imagine this was a cottage hospital or nursing home?

I found this which claims it was in Preston Parish? Borough Sanatorium

Was it? If so, where was it located?

Also she lived in St Aubyns Hove, I thought that would have been far enough to be listed on a death register in Hove or Brighton?

Yeah. Foredown Tower was a hospital then. So the records say.

Found what mate?

When we lived in Downs Park we were told by an elderly local chap that Foredown Hospital was an isolation hospital.
