Bit in the Mirror this morning says 'Former Chelsea boss John Hollins is being targeted for the vacant boss's job at Brighton'.

Would make sense. Cheap, local option.

Would that mean we got extra coverage on the BBC Breakfast sports news?

Hollins would be a useful addition to the coaching set up but I would like to see Wilkins given a decent chance to prove himself before any decision is made on the managers job.

He's doing OK at Crawley, despite being under the same kind of cosh as an Albion manager would be.

(from wikipedia)

Hollins returned to Chelsea on a free transfer in 1983, and helped the club gain promotion back to the First Division in 1983-84, playing a further 30 times. He retired at the end of that season, having played 939 first-class matches in total.

Managerial career

Hollins was immediately appointed coach at Chelsea; a year later he became first team-manager following John Neal's retirement. Inheriting an impressive side, Hollins' reign as manager began brightly as Chelsea made an unexpected title challenge, but a late collapse saw them eventually finish 6th. His side still won the Full Members Cup in the same season, though, hanging on for a 5-4 win over Manchester City at Wembley having almost let slip a 5-0 lead. The following years were less successful, as Hollins fell out with several key players, particularly David Speedie and Nigel Spackman, team morale slumped and the side began to struggle. He was sacked in March 1988 with the club in the midst of a four month run without a league win.

After leaving Chelsea, he set up his own sports promotion and agency company, before being tempted back to join the coaching staff of his old club QPR in 1993, whom he briefly managed in 1997. He later had spells as manager of Swansea City, Rochdale and Stockport County, as well as being a pundit for BBC Radio Five Live. On 21 Nov 2005, Hollins was announced as manager of Nationwide Conference side Crawley Town F.C. after the departure of Francis Vines.

Unproven, the only side that did well under him was an inherited one. Why would this be a better bet than Deano? I suppose he'd have more contacts, but wont be so passionate about us as Deano is.

I'm sorry, but Hollins is NOT the man for us. People I know who have had dealings with him at Crawley have described him as a "wrong'un". It was, apparently, his idea to take the club into administration. He was allegedly working for nothing and said he wouldn't work for anyone other than the Majeeds (the very people who weren't paying him, the players or any of their other creditors).

I'm afraid if he sets foot in Withdean, I would be very very unhappy and it would probably lead to me not renewing my season ticket next year and not being as fussed about going to games.

He has done a good job, it seems, on the footballing front in getting in decent players who will play for nothing whilst the administration was sorted out, but that doesn't make up for all the bad things I've heard about him from people I trust.

The simple fact that he said he'd only work for the Majeeds is reason enough to give him a wide berth in my opinion.

John Hollins had one successful spell at Chelsea in about the 1980s, and has done sod all since.

Even Crawley fans were surprised when he got the job there.

No thanks, Dick.

Football: Hollins is target for Brighton
Sunday Mirror, Oct 14, 2001 by RHYS EVANS

FORMER Swansea boss John Hollins is being lined up for the vacant Brighton job.

Seagulls supremo Dick Knight is believed to have had secret talks with close friend and ex-Vetch chairman Steve Hamer over the 55-year- old Londoner's suitability.

Manager Mickey Adams quit Brighton last week to become Dave Bassett's deputy at Leicester City.

Wealthy businessman Knight is keen to find a successor quickly and is believed to have sounded Hamer out over Hollins.

The move could be excellent news for cash-strapped Swans who are subject to a pounds 200,000 compensation claim from Hollins after his sacking last month.
