Best gratuitous use of major diplomatic incident in a sporting story ever.

I also now want to see those two in the same group, and every Kiwi player asked about it. Plus the New Zealand manager putting up a picture of the Rainbow Warrior in the dressing room.

Why thank you Tooting...I not only have a green leaning, but also a very long memory!

Henry admitted it was a hand ball, but didnt admit to it being deliberate which it clearly was.

That is the dissapointing part. If he had said yes i did it deliberately to get my country to the World Cup i would have more respect for him than i do now.

If UEFA have any balls they should ban Henry from the first 3 games at the world cup, thats the punishment i would dish out.

Alternatively use VIDEO EVIDENCE FOR GODS SAKE IN GAMES FOR SUCH INCIDENTS

He looked bloomin' shifty afterwards. It is easy to read stuff into what you see - but he did not look a man who had just laid on the pass to help his country to the World Cup Finals.

Sadly you can't point this at the ref or linesmen, they were both unsighted. Sadly it is an indictment of the game these days, Henry knew he could cheat and get away with it so he did. In the past players had more respect for their sport, the supporters, their opponents, nowadays there is just too much at stake, and they don’t give a f*** any more.

The only solution to this for me is to ban Henry for the next ten international matches, that will mean he misses the World Cup and sends a message out to all players that this type of thing will not be tolerated.
I can't see the match being replayed for a player handballing the ball to help score a goal. Matches tend to be replayed when there is match fixing about.

is the right answer ....

Next question, is this as bad as diving for a penalty something Keane and Doyle have done for a club side.
FIFA need to make the toos available for the officials to spot this type of thing.

Great player, can anyone seriously admit on here that if you were in the same position trying to get your country to the world cup you wouldn't have done the same?

There's athletes out there who wouldnt resort to such tactics.

John Landy in the 1956 Olympics 1500m final stopped and doubled back to check on a team mate Ron Clarke who ahd fallen over even though that could cost him his own chance of victory.

That's what being a true sportsman is about, not being a cheating **** like Henry.

If you don't think Henry's a great player because he's a cheat, who is a great player at the moment then? I can't think of any decent player who hasn't cheated at some point, and from memory Henry's probably the best player who cheats the least

I love thge irony.

the Irish, of all countries , whingeing about someone getting away with bending the rules.

All those "Irishmen" that played last night...........Republic of Ireland: Given, O'Shea, St. Ledger, Dunne, Kilbane, Lawrence, Whelan, Andrews, Duff, Doyle, Keane.
Subs: Joe Murphy, McGeady, McShane, Kelly, Gibson, Hunt, Best.
ET30: Peep! Peep! Peep! It's all over. Ireland have performed heroically, put in their best performance for years and - with monotonous predictability - failed to qualify. They've been well and truly swindled out of a place at the World Cup finals, but the fact of the matter is that they spurned more than enough gilt-edged chances to win the game in normal time.

So the best example you could find is from over 50 years, in a seperate sport, with no similiarity whatsoever

It's AN example.

I'm not going to go over every single sport and pick out every single good act of sportsmanship and print it here.

f*** me in the NBA DAILY there's players who put their hands up to the ref when a whistle is blown to acknowledge they commited the foul not somebody else.

That modern enough for you?

Unfortunately he's a cheat, and will be remembered as such. Truth is though, he always was, but while he was playing at Arsenal there were plenty of peop,e willing to turn a blind eye to it.

I've never seen him in the same light since he rolled around on teh floor holding his face after Puyol tackled him. It was a Champions League night and Henry wasn't bothered about the free kick 35 yards from goal, he was desperately trying to get the other guy sent off. That was YEARS ago, so last night isn't a new discovery that Henry tries to cheat.

he's not the only one of course, but that doesn't excuse it at all.

Well I won't remember Henry as a cheat I'll remember him for all the great goals he scored and the fact I feel honoured to have watched him in person.

How about when Harrington called a penalty stroke on himself after the ball moved a fraction after he'd addressed it. No-one saw it, you couldn't see it on the telly, but he knew it was a penalty and called it. It may well have been in The Open as well, I'm sure it was a major.

How's that for a TOP CLASS sportsman, who is exactly that, a SPORTSMAN.

He actually said that he didn't do it on purpose (well, he did this morning on SSN).

So he is a liar as well as a cheat.

People seem to be missing the point another team has now qualified that is quite capable of putting us (England) out of the world cup, which I don't think would have applied to Ireland.

You just know the French will raise their game if they play us.

banned for 10 matches? For what?

Neither the ref or linesman saw anything. No offence was punished at the time. No free kick was awareded for an offence under the Laws of the game.

So, exactly what are we banning him for?

If he had punched someone off the ball and the ref had missed it you wouldn't be saying that would you?
