Henry a CHEAT or a Great Player

How can you sensibly suggest getting a three match ban for what is a bookeable offence?

That depends entirely upon whether you define the offence as 'unsporting behaviour' or 'serious foul play'. Remember UEFA attempted to give Eduardo a 3-match ban for something which is a yellow card offence earlier in the season as well. FIFA/UEFA/FA make up the rules as they go along so anything is possible. Ultimately, I would advocate a harsher than usual penalty because of the implications of what he did.

Henry was one of the greatest players of recent times to ply his trade on these shores. Yeah he cheated but at the end of the day so did Anelka a few minutes before and Keane should have done with his chance. At the end of the day Henry and Anelka are going to the world cup Keane isn't, who is the loser?

It's a total cliche, but football is the loser. That cheats are able to prosper is, IMHO, a damning indictment of the game.

Am not entirely sure how a cheat can ever be a great player?

A cheat is a cheat, best example of which is Mr Maradona. I don't care wheteher he had sublime skills, he cheated, therefore he is a cheat.

If Tiger Woods was caught cheating, he would be labelled a cheat, all of his past achievements would be ignored and he would never be able to play golf again. I don't see why it should be different in football, personally.

They made up the rules about banning Chelsea from making any transfers, they then didnt enforce it. Now you get John Terry taking the piss by saying in all the papers that Chelsea should spend BIG in January.

This is the England captain, he should be making an example of himiself to all the kids out there, not taking the piss out of FIFA.

If Chelsea spend big, then win the league, and then the embargo is enforced, that is cheating to win a big prize too. Where does it end???

Couldn't really give a flying f*** about the handball, what pisses me off the most is how FIFA just decide to change the rules of the game whenever they feel like it to suit their needs.

The decision to seed teams in the play-offs halfway through the competition is disgraceful, but that all seems to be forgotten now.

Just another example of how the game is rotten to the core and driven by nothing but greed.

One of the few players who I have actually gone to a game (Villa v Arse) to see play, just so I could see him in his absolute prime...a trully gifted player and a crowd pleaser, as was Maradona, unfortunately he has also now tarnished that reputation.

If it was an England player who did that and got us a place in the finals we would all be sniggering at getting away with it.

Henry isn't getting a pounding by the French press at all, if you read it today. They are however being uncharacteristically humble about their team, as they know they were not only outplayed on the night, but don't deserve to be there on the qualifying campaign either. Plus the Domenech agenda, with plenty in the media gutted he will be there for a bit longer now.

But the French press aside, and even if you see the real villains of the piece as the officials, whose job it is to rule out handball goals, Henry's status here (and Ireland) where he spent so much time cultivating his reputation, has taken a huge hit. He may only realise years from now quite how much. There was just too much at stake for it ever to be forgotten.

I hope the French get stuffed out of sight in the World Cup Finals, cheats should never prosper...failing to score a goal and being beaten by New Zealand...who ironically hate them, remember the Rainbow Warrior, would do for me.

Erin go bragh!

But would you still cheer England on at the World Cup?

To be honest I struggle to get myself up for internationals these days anyway, since cheating seems to have an almost acceptable part of the game at that level.

Owen used to make me cringe.

!

Best gratuitous use of major diplomatic incident in a sporting story ever.

I also now want to see those two in the same group, and every Kiwi player asked about it. Plus the New Zealand manager putting up a picture of the Rainbow Warrior in the dressing room.

Yes - football followers tend to have very long memories. Also I wonder what Gillette will be thinking this morning.
