To be fair, he made that point himself. He admitted that he himself was not a great player, but that he tried really hard and made sure he played as best, and worked as hard, as he possibly could every time he pulled on the England shirt. His complaint was that a number of players who are much, much better than him don't appear to think they need to try very hard and, as result, don't try very hard. Personally, I think he has a point.

i think it is a shame that we are not allowed to critisize our national team. i usually stick up for them, but not this time. if the people who pays their wages cannot critisize them when thing go wrong then how are they ever gonna know they were shite. i also agree with what ray wilkins said last night, the team spokesman or captain should have come out and spoke for the other players. but as i have said repeatedly he should be stripped of his captaincy. reasons, he took somebody elses place during the euro's because he would not admit until afterwards that he was not fit.
also his form has dipped dramatically for england, i think he has become complaicent, taking captaincy from him would resolve this, and he then should play better again.
and last of all, last night spitting the dummy out incident after the game. he should of spoke for the other players to the media.

what have owen and g neville done about the coloumns they write in the papers, have the still done them? or have they lost their contracts with the papers yet? anybody know?

The side deserved some criticism for the performance, but the public ridiculing of David James two days before an important international against Poland did NOTHING for team morale. If 95% of Sun readers think that Mavis the donkey is a better goalkeeper than James then it sums up 95% of Sun readers. David James, by all accounts, is an intelligent, decent human being, and this type of personal attack is unjustifiable. He has family and they suffer too, not just him, when things of this nature occur.

As for 'the people that pays their wages' argument, Sun journalists do not pay those wages, neither do you or I, it's the FA.

There is a footballing argument for dropping Beckham, or relieving him of captaincy so that he can concentrate on his game, but relating it to his commerical interests (as some have done) is a cheap and misguided shot. Doing the Va-Va-Voom adverts has not affected Henry's form after all, and neither has serving at Burger King as from last Monday diminished David Lee's chances of ever playing for England.

Similarly there is an argument (though IMO a weak one) for sacking Sven, but basing it on the fact that

a) He is foreign
b) He has knobbed a couple of birds in the last couple of years
c) He does not shout and scream on the touchline like Barry Fry
and therefore is not committed
d) He is well paid

are distractors and belittle any valid reasons for the points put forward.
