Four of us (two couples) went there for an evening meal just under a year ago. We dressed up a bit because the surroundings and the descriptions on the menus (not to mention the prices) lead us to think that it might be a bit upmarket so we were surprised to find the waiting staff looking a bit casual in branded polo shirts, which seemed a bit at odds with the ambience. The service is only to pub standard (when I'm spending £25 on a bottle of wine I don't expect it to be plonked on the table so I can help myself) and the food is gastro-pub at best. I found out while we were there that they are part of a chain and the other venues in the chain appeared to be pubs so that may explain the attutide to food and service and I wonder if the parent company finds the venue a bit overwhelming. The reviews on Trip Advisor seem to bear this out and I feel lucky that didn't have to wait hours for our food to arrive as others appear to have. We had a good evening but we couldn't help feeling that we'd have had the same experience in The Connaught on Sackville Road for less money and without an expensive taxi ride.

Know of people who've worked there and quit because they only used tinned veg, no variety in the menu etc. "Chefs" just heat up frozen food which isn't what you should be getting for the prices they charge.

We've eaten there. Beautiful surroundings, good beer but we waited over an hour for our food and when it finally arrived it was disappointing. Could be magnificent, but wasn't

I've eaten there several times and always found the food and service very good, and reasonably priced. After eating, it's nice to be able to go through to the lounge area and have your coffee and liquers while you relax alongside a log fire.
The only downside on my last visit was having to traipse through a very muddy car park.
During my childhood I spent many happy hours in Stanmer Park and I am really pleased that Stanmer House is being utilised in this way after years of neglect.

Don't think that's true. I went there for brunch early in December and found there was nothing veggie on the menu. They made me some Eggs Florentine and the spinach was definitely not tinned. It's also impossible to reheat hollandaise sauce as it would curdle, so that was clearly fresh.

Thought the food was good - Mrs Gwylan said the sausages were really excellent - and didn't find the service poor at all. It may be different in the evening.

Used to play cricket on the green opposite the house...shame that pitch has gone...very picturesque.

Glad you said that, I thought I was going mad when I saw there's no cricket pitch there but I have firm memories of playing there and going for tea inside the house.

We went for a walk a couple of days ago around stammer park and wandered past stanmer house, which is now a pub/ restaurant.

Anyone tried it yet? It looks very plush in there.

Must be a headaches for stewards on match days now supporters can go there for there pint/grub and have use of the car park's.
