Harvey's is quite simply the best pint of beer in the world...

Perhaps I'll give it another go then. I assumed it was always like that, but maybe it was just a bad-un I had from The Star, cos I honestly could not work out how anyone could enjoy the taste of the stuff.

I shall report back with my findings in due course.

But the very, very best pint of Harveys is to be had from the barrel of Old Ale that is kept in the brewery yard on the Saturday that they launch the new winter's Old.

Saturday 2nd October this year. Mid-day. And they give it away, free of charge! With plenty of time to get to Withdean to enjoy the Albion beating Sheffield United.

My idea of a perfect day.

Even those people who say that Harvey's "doesn't travel" will be impressed by free beer poured inside the brewery.

That's a good tip, Lord B, I shall try to get there for that.

One of my father's best friends was Tony Jenner, the MD and chief brewer at Harvey's. When I was a teenager and my dad wanted to introduce me to the delights of proper beer, we spent a whole afternoon in the Harvey's sampling room, trying out the range that was on offer. Needless to say, I was completely trolleyed by the end of the day.

Tony was really good to me and when I was at uni, he used to send bottles of beer and Harvey's memorabilia to me. Helped the home-sickness pass :)

All cask ales can travel well if they're looked after, and don't sit around in some warehouse for weeks.

Try the White Horse in Parsons Green for the best example of Harveys in the capital.

Tastes pretty good in the Lamb in Eastbourne, too.

Hepworths, and King, both Horsham micros, are worth trying.

Shame about the Golden Galleon though. The beer there had really improved and the pizzas were the best this side of Rome. Still, we now have an authentic Vintage Inn (TM) with all the charm and hospitality you would associate with venture capitalists...

Black Horse in Rottingdean, and Norfolk Arms in Steyning are my recommendations. Plus the Lord Nelson for the full range.

Harveys is indeed an acquired taste, but once acquired, well, a lifetime's pleasure awaits.

wandering off the subject a bit but I actually think the golden galleon has improved since being taken over. The only dissappointment in my eyes was the loss of the micro brewery. (This has been sold to a company call Filton in Eastbourne)

I'm a bit off my Harveys at the moment, the last few i've had seem to be quite sticky and syruppy, I reckon i'm drinking in the wrong pubs

I agree the layout is better but when a good brewery closes, it closes forever and when another free house gets into the clutches of Mitchells and Butlers, or the other pubcos, a little bit of consumer choice is eroded.

I went there at the start of the summer with the kids, intending to watch the sun go down with a nice pint and a good meal, but was told I wasn't allowed to take the high chair outside (on to their spirit-levelled patio, inches away from the building!)

As the alternative was sitting inside on a glorious day, we decamped to the Sussex Ox where such mindless bureacracy is thankfully not part of the management brief. And I think the food was fresh, not the usual Brake Brothers frozen crap.

I can only pass on the comments I hear from the passengers on the Cuckmere Valley Ramblerbus (which I drive regularly). They all say that the Golden Galleon isn't what it was. And they know their pubs!

Incidentally, if anyone wants to see a real blot on the landscape in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (a genuine one!), walk down the eastern side of the Cuckmere from Exceat and look across the river at the tables and umbrellas in the Golden Galleon garden. They are DISGUSTING and should be removed immediately.
