What you had there was a 'firkin' a 76 pint cask.

If it was going to be drunk in one night you may aswell of ordered is 'bright' which means you could have shaken it up with no effect.

Ah right. Cheers. :drink:

Does Lewes offer a REALLY good pint of Harveys any more? The Lewes arms used to do a fab pint, also the Black Horse before Vic retired, but can't say I've had a good one lately. I'd be glad to be put right, though, and I admit I don't drink in the town often these days.

Harveys Best, that is: some of the other Harvey's beers are fine in Lewes pubs when you can get them - the mild in the Sir John Harvey's OK, although their beer's always a bit cold for my taste... if it's absolutely spot-on, Harveys Best should have that very slightly creamy aftertaste, and f***-all head on it.

It certainly doesn't seem to travel well (although the Nelson in Trafalgar Street keeps a pretty good pint), and if you give the stuff half a chance it metamorphoses into a thin, vinegary emetic... but when it's in good nick, there really is no finer pint. Lovely.

I had my two at lunch time in the Lewes Arms. Other places I've sampled a splendid drop are the Gardener's Arms and The John Harvey Tavern.

All in tip top condition.

The Lewes Arms always does it for me. The Swan at Southover is usually pretty fine too.

And I believe the Swan at Falmer serves it...anyone been? :)

Harvey's is the only thing I miss living in Greece...someone did manage to bring a few bottles of the bottled variety last summer but nothing beats a pint of Harveys Best Bitter...

oh well back to Mithos and Amstel I guess......

OK, question for everyone here...

In your opinion, which pub(s) in BRIGHTON serves the best pint of Harvey's?

the Nelson, for me; had a nice pint in the Battle of Trafalgar, too, the other day. But the Nelse always seems to keep Harvey's in good nick. To be honest, I don't usually bother with Harvey's if I'm in most pubs, as it's so often horrible.

In fairness, I usually drink in the Star, which doesn't sell it anyway.

f*** - I'm a Beer Bore...

Lewes Arms and the Gardener's Arms for me. And the Ram at Firle. And the Cricketer's at Berwick.

But the very, very best pint of Harveys is to be had from the barrel of Old Ale that is kept in the brewery yard on the Saturday that they launch the new winter's Old.

Saturday 2nd October this year. Mid-day. And they give it away, free of charge! With plenty of time to get to Withdean to enjoy the Albion beating Sheffield United.

My idea of a perfect day.

Even those people who say that Harvey's "doesn't travel" will be impressed by free beer poured inside the brewery.

My favourite pub for drinking Harveys Old is the Sussex Ox at Milton Street. Huge garden for the kids too.

Favorite Harveys for me can be found in the following...

The Hartington
Rose Hill Tavern
The Mitre Tavern
Lord Nelson
Duke of Wellington
Battle of Trafalgar

.........but THPP. The Harveys in The Tap, is very internittant, and some of the bar staff take little care of this wonderful brew.

Can I be a dissenting voice here ?
I had a pint of Harveys last Friday lunchtime at The Star in Haywards Heath, and I thought it was rank. I only tried it for a change as I'd already had a wifebeater and didn't want to be too gassed up for the afternoon. I struggled to finish it, it tasted like three day old tea that had been strained through an unwashed PE sock which was doused in vinegar.

Needless to say that will have been my last pint of the stuff. The next time I fancy an ale, I shall seek solace in the warm and comforting bosom of the Lazy Toad and their fabulous array of real ales from the cask.

You shouldnt let that bad experience put you off. I used to work a Harveys pub (i wont say which one) but the beer through the week would be a bit hit and miss but on fridays absolutely fantastic, anyway this was basically because the Landlords night on the piss was fridays!

AS a Real Ale Harveys takes a little bit of looking after (not much) but the lines need to be kept clean and the machines that they have now dont do the job properly. It needs to be kept at the right temp and left for 2 days to settle before its ready to use. I have had some really bad pints at some pubs but in the Cricketers in Berwick I have always had a fantastic pint mainly because they poor it strait from the barrel.

However when you do get a great pint of harveys I really do believe that nothing else can beat it - It is the Best Pint in the World!

Easy, you can indeed get rank pints of Harveys the same as any other 'real' ale.

However it is simply the best beer in the world. I would rather have a pint of well-kept Harveys than a bottle of vintage champagne. God Bless the Harveys Brewery.
