Gower predicts Moores sacking

Fascinating discussion - and what a terrible situation for English cricket to be in just months away from the Ashes. The management structure of cricket has always been perverse, especially compared to football. A chairman of selectors, a coach and a captain can all pull in different directions - and Pietersen is strong willed enough to exploit that. The ECB now has to decide whether it gives in to Pietersen and in effect, lets him choose the next coach or whether it stands up to him and then runs the risk of him making the job of whoever it chooses as coach untenable. Unless they get a world respected figure, I think there is no choice but to give in to him. Either way, I can't see any way Moores will still be in work by the weekend.

I am not sure Moores is a fantastic coach. He did very well at Sussex and turned us around. However it is Robinson who took Sussex to the next level, although it will be interesting to see how he does this season, essentially with a new side.

Also Moores best Sussex side was the team in 2005, but he could not get us to be consistent enough.

Your point runs completely counter to what the players at Sussex say about Peter Moores - all of whom gave him the most credit for that first Championship win.

Without Moores, Robinson would not have even come close being able to 'take Sussex to the next level'. Of course Robinson is an excellent coach, but to say Moores isn't is utter folly.

I think the conditions at Sussex are good for coachs like Robbo and Moores, little interferance and not much high level politics going on.

Adams showed with the Yorkshire episode why clubs can look good on paper but need an enviorment where players can floorish and play well. Goodwin, Mushy through to RMJ and Lewry have all had good extended time with us.

I am really looking forward to the new season, hoping this will be the year the youngsters show their promise.

Not dismissing what Moores did, just suggesting he is not as great as some would say.

This whole business is starting to worry me now.

Presumbly the ECB liaised with Moores before Pietersen got the appointment. Moores may even have been instrumental in getting him the gig in the first place.

The problem seems to be with Pietersen here, and I really don't get it. Given the players available I'm not that surprised with our test and one-day results, and but for a final day implosion we could have beaten India in India. Losing a series to South Africa is no disgrace as the Aussie series now is currently showing.

Mushy has been brought in to help Monty and Swann, so let's see how that pans out. I think Harmison was only ever a real force with Troy Cooley coaching him, Hoggard's waned and Jones has been injured, so it's no surprise our bowling is in transition.

Pietersen is a dreadful captain. Totally uninspiring. Reminds me an awful lot of Boycott when he was a captain.

SHould never have been appointed IMHO and I am lead to belive that there was some pretty hard nosed lobying to make him England captain or else he was off for the Indian money with his mate Warney.

and if Morris does sack im, then it leaves the ECB's coacking structure (introduced by Morris) in tatters as Moores is a level 4 coch (highest you can be under the scheme) and part of his appointment was to demonstrate a progressional path to the top jobs for other coaches to come through the system.

The perfect compromise is surely for Bell to be dropped, Pietersen to resign and Vaughan to be reinstated as captain?!

Freddie
Prior
S Jones
Hoggard
Harmison

Would probably give Anderson the benefit of the doubt over Jones, simply as Anderson had a very good 2008 until India and Gibson looks to have improved him.

Monty needs a year out, he is not developing. However do you go with Rashid or the safer option of Swann?

Monty is a complete rabbit AND a liability in the field. We know Rashid can bat, but what's his fielding like?
