I work with enough of the majority who refuse to do more than 16 hours because the would lose the tax credits...
They do the minimum number of hours to gain the most credits...
I had nothing and got where I am through hard work and drive..everything that these people will never have whilst others supplement their laziness.

Mainly you are subsidising employers stinginess.
You should consider that many people work hard for little reward, and that even if everyone was really hard working it wouldn't magically enable them all to own a business or move onto and up the management ladder.
With that I'll leave you to your future of children starving in the streets.

But they are working, so we have moved on from the lazy unemployed being scroungers and now they have jobs albeit 16 hours they are still scroungers, keep going and soon you can call me a scrounger because I have run a small business but I only work 6 days a week.
I think the lady on QT last week was a typical example, there are many who would love more than 16 hours if they could get it and many cannot do more than 16 hours for legitimate reasons and it is right that their money is topped up to help them live a decent life, to take it away and give them less while the rich get richer is way beyond disgusting.

The Tory Lords defeated Blairs Government over Nat. Ins.contributions in 2008, all to do with not needing further Parliamentary legislation to increase the upper earnings limit. So, not such a precedent really.

So a club of unelected goons and bishops can vote down government policy.

I give no opinion on the particular policy, but this is not good. Not good at all.

They need to be elected, or abolished, in my opinion.

I can understand the government being hacked off with the House of Lords, despite a policy which is odious and regressive in equal measure.

The government however loses all credibility though by bringing in the EVEL rule, which means, in the remote likelihood of Labour getting back into power, that a health or education minister would not be able to implement policy because potentially English MP's only would vote on the matter.

looking at this, all i can tell is this was a technical amendment to existing legislation, in which the government wanted to take power to adjust the upper earning limit at will, without further legislation. so not the same, it wasnt a change to actual fiscal policy.

I agree with cutting tax credits, but ONLY when the tax threshold is raised to £12.5k and the living wage of £9 is in place. To cut the top rate of income tax, and increase the threshold of inheritance tax whilst cutting tax credits for low earners is morally wrong. I'm no socialist, and none of these measures will affect me, but this seems very unfair. Don't go on about how most will be better off in a few years, whilst ensuring they will be in some cases, quite substantially worse off until the other measures come into place.

FFS - flat rate (%) tax is fair, and an elaborate monument of ifs ands and buts is a ludicrous waste of everyone's time and money. For the government, this is fiddling with small change. For the people on low income it is a nightmare. And some people think Jezza is mad....

Tories, even if they sort it out, have :shootself

Really?!? I suspect if there was a general election tomorrow, the result would be an even wider Cons. majority.

This time though, everybody would know how the nasty party was going to cut 12 billion from Welfare, the Tories wouldn't be able to skirt round the detail as they did in the last Election. And Cameron wouldn't get away with lying about it.

It doesn't matter, at this stage in the parliamentary life cycle, this will go round the obligatory 3 times and get pushed through with some minor amendments by the commons majority. The Lords can only reject it for amendments,... not simply because they don't like the policy.

Think people are jumping the gun: Tories likely to try to force the issue through & claim HoL outcome is not binding etc. Osbourne unlikely to just roll over.

Well done to the House of Lords, nice to see that they have a conscience and have stood up and been counted. How can DC claim to be the party of Working People and then shaft some of those working the hardest at the bottom of the ladder ? Poor people who are already close to poverty are just blithely expected to lose £1000-£2000 pounds a year and just, well, "work harder " when they are already slogging their guts out ?

The gap in earnings and the gap in reality between the government and those it should protect and support gets ever wider.

...and 'they' didn't know before?.....'they' are obviously a bit dim then....
