My Favourite Got to be Jerusalem

Jerusalem ["And did those feet in ancient time"]
BY WILLIAM BLAKE
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land.
Great choice

My RC school background means that I can't resist a lovely bit of 'Seek ye first the kingdom of god'. It's a load of old bollocks, but who cares about that.

Can't believe no one's mentioned "Lord Of The Dance"

Either "I vow to thee my country" or "For those in peril on the seas". Both put shivers up my spine.

The words to "I vow to thee..." says everything about how I feel about England. Best country in the world. God's country.

Great tune, but what the flip does it actually all mean???

On the ocean wave
Abide with Me
For those in Peril on the Sea.

Both will be sung at my funeral & I'll leave the church to GOSBTS.

You're all welcome, wear your colours!

Although Jerusalem can be found in hymn books, it isn't technically a hymn. Some people interpret this poem as being about sexual freedom. William Blake was an ardent naturist.

Cwm Rhondda (Bread of Heaven). The Welsh Rugby hymn - sung by a packed crowd it is utterly magnificent. And I am neither Christian nor Welsh!

Strangely, this is sung at all our family weddings and funerals. Not sure when this tradition started.

I can't for the life of me see how anybody could interpret it as being about sexual freedom.

We live in the early days of a better land -- if we work for it.
Also, an over-reliance on coal, and heavy industry, gets in the way of that.
