It was not a stupid question in my opinion.

Strill no answer then.

What created you god if he was the creator of you. All things have a first cause, you claim this to be so and so you have to abide by the rules.

First cause of your god?

And I know you wont answer. Like all apologetics you will avoid the question and then claim victory whilst p[raying to a sky daddy. And you will do it with a straight face, all the time claiming to follow the 10 commandements.

Even the one against bearing false witness. That's lying in case you aren't sure of the meaning, and remember in your mind god knows. So you are going to hell for lying. I would say see you there, but I know it all bollocks.

I have replied to the question, just because the answer isn't within your limited understanding doesn't mean I don't believe it to be true.

So far one party to the debate has been conducting himself in a reasonable fashion, the other has given accusations of dishonesty, imagination and being a liar.

Oh lord, go and stick your head in a blender you thick idiot!

Dreadful way to argue.

My two penneth worth for what its worth (science aside) is that I don't believe god exists. I believe Jesus (or a man as such) existed and that people liked his philosophy of life and sought to adopt it as their own. Someone decided to write these teachings down and asked this man about his life and a story began which is exactly that, a story. Kind of like fisherman and the storys of the one that got away - they are always embelished a little...

I appreciate some of the bible teachings in the same way I appreciate the advice in (some of) aesops fables. I cannot reconcile within myself that a divine power exists which by my praying to is able to influence the path of my life, or give me peace for any troubles I may be suffering. This path is my own choice to a certain extent and luck of the dice to the rest. My problems are shared with my friends and family - not with a person who doesn't/cannot respond.

I could waffle on for ages about Catholics and the incorrect influence of the roman catholic church down to the local shoreham baptists who park all over a main thoroughfare making the road difficult to use on a Sunday morning whilst they are inside assuring themselves that they following the commandment about being good to their neighbours....but I won't....being raised in a strict (Australian) Church of England background gives me insight to both sides, and I have only one suggestion...always be objective and question things. Never accept something just because that man over there in the dress in the pulpit said it was so. Question it and you will find what you truly believe.

I am questioning. When i've finished reading the bible i plan on the other religious books and then god delusion (not that i think there is any chance i'll believe a word he says) because i DON'T want to be ignorant.

interesting. you've limited your range of reading and reached a conclusion before completing it. i suggest you dont read the God Delusion. read the Origin of Spieces and some philiosophy.

Quite easy really.

Within me I sense a presence that to me has always represented "god". Now I seek to explore the physical/scientific things that might show a physical presence to go with that sense of precense I feel.

As for being a contradiction, well aren't we all? I follow christs teachings, I enjoy working/socialising within the Catholic community I'm part of. That makes me Catholic in my book.

To be Catholic is to be part of the worlds most diverse community in the world. No other community shares so many different cultures. It gives me so many varied avenues to help out others in the community and feel part of it I don't think i'd ever leave it.

Given you've offered nothing to this thread in terms of discussion I guess I shouldn't take you seriously either. :)

i dont think we are all contradictions,i know exactly where i stand on religion, but if it makes you happy to be a hypocrite you carry on,it would be nice though if you types could keep your gobbledygook to yourselves and stop banging on about it to everyone else

Agree. This thread has served it's purpose. The overwhelming majority don't believe in god. No surprises there then.

I have worked it out over a beer tonight, here goes

Our fairy, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy wings,
Thy Colgate come,
Thy cleanse my gums,
In morning as it is in evening,
Give me my due for what's in my head,
And give me it in ten-pieces,
As I will save it to go to the dentist,
And lead me not into sweet shops,
and deliver me from the drill,
for thine is the wisdom, the incisor and the molar, forever and ever.
Amen

good effort seagull mouse, particularly like the last line.

I don't know if this question has been asked yet amongst the 1200 posts here, but if God created the universe, who or what created God?
God is outside the laws of existence so is not bounded by the laws of cause and effect. Hardly disengenuous but what I believe.
It's fair enough that you believe that, but when asking atheists for their answer on where the universe came from, try and appreciate that your own answer makes no sense.

He must have been preempting Darwin's Origin of the Species. It sounds here like you're arguing against the existance of god, as that is the modern idea that is going through the stages you mention.

I don't believe in god, but if he does exist (as described to us by the bible) he sure is a nasty piece of work.

And dont forget Kalimantan that their all knowing all loving god created a world without sin knowing we would sin and putting into it the tree that allowed us to do so. He then decided that because I hadn't sinned but someone else had in the way he knew all the time they would he would condemn you and I to eternal damnation for something we didn't do and which he knew adam and eve would do in the first place.

following this, religious thinking for you?

He then sent his son down to earth to die on a cross to redeem me for a sin I didn't comit but adam and eve, who he created knowing they would do so did.....

After all that I am supposed to call this thing an all loving being and worship him.

And once we do all that we can talk about the man who offered up his daughters to be raped to save some angels at the demand of this all loving god. This being the same god that sent 2 bears to rip 42 children to pieces becauses they commited the sin of laughing at a bald man.

All f***ing loving. Don't make me f***ing laugh.

No need to get angry mate, many perfectly good people are religious, no doubt including the ones we're arguing with here. Its frustrating that they are so intransigent in their arguments but that's the nature of brainwashing. There are many on here who would go to their graves convinced that Brighton are the greatest team the world has ever seen!

Your're right that religion is more a force for bad than a force for good, but more and more people are realising this. On the other hand there are many people that feel their 'personal god' helps them be a good person in their dealings with others, and thats OK. I get the feeling most people like this have been touched by an incident in their own lives, rather than being driven by a priest or rabbi or whoever.

Which is interesting. I expected far more agnostics, whereas most people either say they are atheists, de-facto atheists or theists. Its agnostics that do my head in. People who don't understand what is meant by 'chance' and 'proof; sit on the fence 'til they get splinters, or groups like the Church of England that is so wishy-washy its constantly changing the meaning of the bible just to try and stay relevant and 'in-charge'

I am questioning. When i've finished reading the bible i plan on the other religious books and then god delusion (not that i think there is any chance i'll believe a word he says) because i DON'T want to be ignorant.

You'll hate it. I'd be amazed if you finished it. But it is a brilliant book, happily converted me from blind agnostiscm to something approaching radical atheism :lolol: Indeed it is a treaty aimed at agnostics and creationists, principally confronting the belief that there is a God who created life and tearing apart all the arguments put forward by creationists. In a continuation of his other books the Selfish Gene and the Blind Watchmaker, he spends a lot of time using gene theory to discuss the adaptative significance of religion, why and under what conditions did religion evolve, and comes to conclusions different to my previous understanding. Interesting stuff that confirms him as one of the finest thinkers in the world.
