The Observer picked its all-time greats team yesterday (haven't seen this mentioned anywhere) and had Steve Gerrard in its midfield.
They justified the choice by saying that someone had to do the donkey work for a midfield of Maradona, Cruyff and Zidane but I reckon that if lot got the ball, there wouldn't be much possession lost.
Considering that the likes of Di Stefano, Garrincha, Puskas, Zico, Best, Charles, Netzer, Gento and Charlton couldn't get in the team, Gerrard looks like an odd choice.
The team is also heavily dominated by modern players. Only one played most of his career before 1970 and eight have played in the last 20 years - I know players are fitter and faster now but I can't believe that they're that much more skilful.
